Dunham Assistant Principal Dan Malia Technical-Vocational Director Dr. John Strand, the new Superintendent of Schools, comes to Newton after working at various educational positions, including teacher, principal, and Superintendent of the Pelham, N.Y. system. Strand feels great respect for the Newton schools, whose quality he works to continue. Outside of his office, Dr. Strand enjoys cooking for his family of three and playing Donkey Kong. Dan Malia, formerly housemaster of Fiiley House, is in charge of the entire Newton Technical-Vocational pro- gram. His job includes directing Business, Home Economics, and Work-Study programs across the city, especially at North where the departments are such an im- portant part of the school. Malia has dedicated himself to providing Newton students with a comprehensive and car- ing Technical-Vocational system. Atwood P. Dunham has served as Administrative Assis- tant to the Principal for thirteen years, becoming one of the most recognizable members of the North administra- tion. From the morning announcements to the afternoon activities, his reponsibilities are far-ranging, including schedules, grades, and graduation. Through all his work. Dunham still finds time to teach a class in his original sub- ject, mathematics.

Marya Levenson became principal at North this year after serving as Assistant Director of Harvard University's Principal's Center. When Richard Mechem announced that he would retire after more than twenty years as principal, interest in his suc- cessor ran high. The Newfonite demanded access to the search committees decision and was among the first to announce Mrs. Levenson's name as a finalist. Although Mrs. Levenson had attended Bennington and Brandeis, Boston University, and Harvard, North's corridors presented a new kind of learning experience. She feels grateful to teachers, staff, PTSA members, and students for their welcoming. Ever since Senior Class President Larry Tafe in- troduced her to the student body, she said, People have been very suportivef' Mrs. Levenson lost no time in getting acquainted with North. To make herself more accessible to everyone, she visited homerooms and classes and could frequently be found on Main Street where students could come up to her and discuss policy issues. Mrs. Levenson even appeared in the school musical Carousel as, of course, a high-school prin- cipal. After school, Mrs. Levenson works towards her doctorate and spends time with her husband and theirthree children. The balance between extracurriculars and course work is, she feels, North's greatest asset. She has sensed a real commitment to teaching and learning among faculty and students, as well as a large school's opportunities for enjoyment. For the future, Mrs. Levenson looks forward to many changes. The addition of a ninth grade in the fall of 1983 has prompted new ideas about the cur- riculum. Even the schedule will be changed to give students more opportunities to take the new classes. With the dedicated and professional faculty, Mrs. Levenson sees dynamic and exciting prospects for the school. A -x f , ffiyf - -,.g, A 'pf gas? f

North High is divided into tive houses, administrative units which shrink the school down to manageable size. The house system brings the administration closer to the students and divides the school into well-organized sec- tions. Each house includes tour tloors of homerooms and hundreds ot color-coded lockers. A housemaster's duties include running the house office, keeping up the house commons room and above all looking after the students in his house. Two guidance counselors work in each house, aiding students from their first arrival in school to their college and career choices. Housemasters and counselors are dedicated to helping their students find most opportunities at North. Each house has a council of students from the various homerooms. Councils work throughout the year, raising money for charitable causes and the annual house scholarships. tw. if M , in Y . Gs is s ,, IZ O xfnfifvfi :gf F' ., ,, A jf yi J, ,Aon if If, ,Qi 31.. .
