Marya Levenson became principal at North this year after serving as Assistant Director of Harvard University's Principal's Center. When Richard Mechem announced that he would retire after more than twenty years as principal, interest in his suc- cessor ran high. The Newfonite demanded access to the search committees decision and was among the first to announce Mrs. Levenson's name as a finalist. Although Mrs. Levenson had attended Bennington and Brandeis, Boston University, and Harvard, North's corridors presented a new kind of learning experience. She feels grateful to teachers, staff, PTSA members, and students for their welcoming. Ever since Senior Class President Larry Tafe in- troduced her to the student body, she said, People have been very suportivef' Mrs. Levenson lost no time in getting acquainted with North. To make herself more accessible to everyone, she visited homerooms and classes and could frequently be found on Main Street where students could come up to her and discuss policy issues. Mrs. Levenson even appeared in the school musical Carousel as, of course, a high-school prin- cipal. After school, Mrs. Levenson works towards her doctorate and spends time with her husband and theirthree children. The balance between extracurriculars and course work is, she feels, North's greatest asset. She has sensed a real commitment to teaching and learning among faculty and students, as well as a large school's opportunities for enjoyment. For the future, Mrs. Levenson looks forward to many changes. The addition of a ninth grade in the fall of 1983 has prompted new ideas about the cur- riculum. Even the schedule will be changed to give students more opportunities to take the new classes. With the dedicated and professional faculty, Mrs. Levenson sees dynamic and exciting prospects for the school. A -x f , ffiyf - -,.g, A 'pf gas? f
