Richard Mechem became principal of Newton North High School in 1960. Mr. Mechem was born in Evanston, lllinois. He attended Harvard College and graduated with honors. He then went on to get his Masters Degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Before coming to Newton North High School, Mr. Mechem taught at St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire, and was principal of Walnut Hills High School in Ohio. Nlr. Mechem has seen a dramatic change in education as well as society dur- ing his tenure at Newton North. During his twenty-two years as principal of Newton North, the combining of the technical voca- tional program with Newton North has been one of the most beneficial and rewarding events in Mr. Mechem's career. Though Newton North is large, Mr. Mechem thinks that these are substantial gains to the students because of its size. The large size enables students to interact with other students from all backgrounds. The house plan was devised to personalize Newton North by allowing each student to belong to a smaller community within Newton North.
