Cora E. Riley served from 1930 to 1948 as North's first Director of Guidance. Students and colleagues respected her greatly, and she cared deeply for them. George P. Guild is the housemaster for the purple house. .arjg 'U'- tx- vc:-:zihr K' i l . l G-at Richard M. Adams Housemaster, Palmer House 'x Adams House was named for Enoch Case Adams. He was the principal of Newton North from 1879 to 1921. During his 25 years as principal, Adams was deeply involved with interscholastic athletics and school activities. Norman Gaudet, Adams Housemaster, says that this year's Adams House council stimulated school spirit at NNHS and raised money for the Adams House scholarship fund. l5'l ? 5 l 1 4 l 1 , . George P. Guild, Jr. Housemaster, Riley House Palmer was named after Irving O. Palmer, the first principal of the Technical High School which was constructed in 1910. Palmer initiated the policy of personal guidance for each student. Five years after the classical and technical programs combined in 1923, he became principal of the combined school. Ft sf t kf Atwood P. Dunham Administrative Assistant Atwood P. Dunham, North's Assistant Principal, is directly in charge of the day-to-day running of the school. His responsibilities include grade-reporting, scheduling, overseeing extra-curricular activities, and graduation. Mr. Dunham began his career in education as a mathematics teacher but became in- terested in administration while Chairman of the Newton High School Faculty Senate. For the past twelve years, he has been the Administrative Assis- tant to the Principal. By teaching one class, super- vising the scheduling of students, and serving on a variety of committees, I remain in contact with young people and am still able to have a voice in policy-making. Aaron Fink has been Newton's Superintendent of Schools for the past twelve years. A graduate of Rutgers and Harvard Universities, he spent sixteen years as a high school principal in Massachusetts and in New York before becoming Superintendent in Newton. ln addition, Mr. Fink has been a Director of Education Collaborative for Greater Boston CEdCoJ since 1969. Dan Malia, a former Riley Housemaster, is in charge of both Newton's City Wide and Newton North's Technical Vocational programs. He attend- ed Gorham State College, University of Connec- ticut, Harvard, and Boston University. Mr. Malia's job also includes him in the Work-Study, Home Economics, and Business Programs throughout the Newton School System. --dub' Wm? Meredith Z. Ghattas Housemaster, Beals House Barry House was named after Dr. Lee T. Barry who became the principal of Newton North High School in 1953. Barry also sponsored the Newton High School PTSA and coordinated a citizens' secondary school study program. These programs strengthened the bond between the school and the Newton community. Barry had the respect and affection of his colleagues and students. Gail Stein, housemaster of Barry House, says that the Edco program for the hearing impaired and the Barry House Council make Barry House a very special place. .f , gs s .wa 4.3-5'-Qi ,frm John N. Beals was the principal of Newton's first high school, which opened in 1859. Although the high school had a small staff and faculty at that time, Beals met the challenge of providing college and non-college programs for the students enrolled. Meredith Z.
