Ft sf t kf Atwood P. Dunham Administrative Assistant Atwood P. Dunham, North's Assistant Principal, is directly in charge of the day-to-day running of the school. His responsibilities include grade-reporting, scheduling, overseeing extra-curricular activities, and graduation. For the past twelve years, he has been the Administrative Assis- tant to the Principal. By teaching one class, super- vising the scheduling of students, and serving on a variety of committees, I remain in contact with young people and am still able to have a voice in policy-making. Aaron Fink has been Newton's Superintendent of Schools for the past twelve years. A graduate of Rutgers and Harvard Universities, he spent sixteen years as a high school principal in Massachusetts and in New York before becoming Superintendent in Newton. ln addition, Mr. Fink has been a Director of Education Collaborative for Greater Boston CEdCoJ since 1969. Richard Mechem became principal of Newton North High School in 1960. Mr. Mechem was born in Evanston, lllinois. He attended Harvard College and graduated with honors. He then went on to get his Masters Degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Before coming to Newton North High School, Mr. Mechem taught at St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire, and was principal of Walnut Hills High School in Ohio. Nlr. Mechem has seen a dramatic change in education as well as society dur- ing his tenure at Newton North. During his twenty-two years as principal of Newton North, the combining of the technical voca- tional program with Newton North has been one of the most beneficial and rewarding events in Mr. Mechem's career. Though Newton North is large, Mr. Mechem thinks that these are substantial gains to the students because of its size. The large size enables students to interact with other students from all backgrounds. The house plan was devised to personalize Newton North by allowing each student to belong to a smaller community within Newton North. Mr. Mechem says that the quality of both the students and faculty at Newton North has made his job pleasurable. -'CV 0-Qs Richard W. Mechem v
