For a first year program, especially on the varsity level, a winning season is a bit too much to ask for. Steady improve- ment Over the course of the season is a more realistic goal that most first year coaches shoot for. ln the case of our first girls' swimming team, Coach Benn Merritt achieved his goal. An Opening loss to Lexington by an overwhelming score of l9-76 showed that the team indeed had plenty to improve upon. But with the experienced coaching of Mr. Merritt and the leader- ship Of senior captain Judy Robertson, the team showed steady improvement, excitement, and interest. The team's record does not speak for the total seasOn's achievements. With Judy Robertson placing consistently in various events, Mary Mulvaney scoring in the 100 yd. back- stroke and individual medleys, and sophomores Beth Ryan and Renee Bott tallying in the 50 yd. freestyle and 100 yd, but- terfiy respectively, the team's total point output climbed steadily. Although they lost to a strong Dover-Sherborn team in the next to last contest the team showed the spirit and determina- tion that Coach Merritt hopes to build a strong swimming program on at Newton High in the coming years. ewriiiilw ff ,Q .
