The Presidenfs Message This for Newton Junior College has truly been a year of achievement and distinction . . . a period of growth and accomplishment unmatched in its entire history. Recent months of intensive planning and unremitting effort have found their reward in institu- tional recognition . . . in accreditation by an agency of professional peers. The fact of accreditation is important to the College and its constituents beyond possible measure. Of this singular recognition the College and the community can be enormously proud. But perhaps a greater significance lies with the nature of the process itself based, as it was, on penetrating self-study and self-evaluation leading to institu- tional growth and improvement. The process was properly focused on high motives and sound purpose and was appropriately dominated by a search for excellence. It was as little as possible dissuaded by practical concession and compromise. It represented, among other things, a gratifying and productive unity of contributing parts usefully integrated in common cause. Further and wisely, the process was not regarded as terminal, but as a continuing and never-ending growth toward a perfection which seems always elusive but eternally worth the striving. Might not this same pattern of growth apply with equal validity to the lives of individuals? As you reflect on the pages that follow and savor of the memories they evoke, perhaps you may be persuaded to give thought to an assessment of your own plan for life and plot a course of growth based on noble objective and a life-long search for excellence. In this, I wish you Godspeed . 9
