mm Charles W. Dudley Director The Reflector is a mirror of the past-a retro- spective image of a year gone by. And its proc- ess, reflection, is a poignant and nostalgic after- glance-a contemplative rendezvous with events now history. But reflection is a thing of paradox and contrast. It is at once a frivolous pastime of a dream-mind and a serious and exacting mo- ment of accounting and truth. It is a simple and innocuous end in itself and it is the well-spring of a thousand future thoughts. It is a fragile fragment of a pleasant interlude and it is the sternly cruel reminder of mislaid intent. It is the soporiiic drug of camplacency and the virile thrust of plan and program. Reflection, further to observe, is not the prop- erty alone of the individual. It is an exercise of institutions as well. They have their moments of reminiscent woolgathering and of painful self- assessment. They too cast backward glances on tribulation and triumph and indulge in deep soul-searching, as many a human would. They too are lulled by the sweet dreams of apathy and are yet fired by the white heat of zeal and desire. But, in common, the two-individual and in- stitution-have the incomparable advantage of prohting by reflection, of learning from and building on the foundations of the past. And thus it is that Newton Junior College and all its inhabitants -- students, staff, and faculty - may seize on this moment to reflect on events of the year and contemplate the promise of a lifetime to come. As an institution the College, in the months past, has undergone trial and travail-has been put to the test of endurance. But in this Crucible of crisis its worth and vitality have come nearer to being proved and established Without ques- tion. Its stature has been upward extended, its horizons infinitely enlarged, and its climate enor- mously enriched. This being so, the College can now with considerable pride reflect on a year which, though threaded with problems, has wit- nessed significant growth and accomplishment. As individuals each of us during the year has been companion to a sometimes exasperating but very often exciting experience of contest and change wherein the friction of obstacle and challenge, far from eroding, may very well have enhanced our growing-may have moved us measurably toward a life of greater meaning and fulfillment. So, then, as we read and scan the pages of the Reflector that follow, by all means let us indulge our memories for the pleasure they may bring, but let us look upon them also-as the College itself most certainly will-as reminders of things Worthwhile yet to be done and heights of ex- cellence yet to be reached. Reflect if we will, but aspire we must.
