Gfzclmesffza The Newton High School Orchestra has suc- cessfully completed its schedule for another year. Composed of 100 members and directed by E. S. Sanderson, the orchestra has participated in many of the school functions this year. November 17 they played for the seniors production of Love Is Too Much Trouble , the operetta, Hansel and Gretel, January 265 the junior play, Curtain Going Up! February 193 and Cuckoos on the Hearth, the all-school play on April 23. Instead of entering the District Music Fes- tival at Hutchinson this year, the combined band, chorus and orchestra arranged to have an ex- change program with Kingman. Kingman presented its program in Lindley Hall, January 12, so the NHS musicians traveled to Kingman for the return concert, April 9. The solos and ensembles, however, did enter the Dis- trict Contest. December 14 the orchestra and chorus pre- sented a Christmas program. In May all the instrumental groups, the grade school musicians included, presented their spring concert. Page l'V1'a1vlr'cn

The peppy Newton High School Band, directed by E. S. Sanderson, has again chalked up a successful year to its credit. Consisting of 100 members, the band started the school year by playing at the football games and going through their Various formations at half times. They Wound up their 1953-54 sched- ule by playing at the Regional Tournament held in Lindley Hall. G14 This year a new note was added when the twirlers performed during half time at the bas- ketball games. Drum major for this year has been Vernal Miller. The twirlers were Donna McKanna, Eunice Barrett, Marilyn Ewy, Helen Buller, and Janice Ervin. Page Eighteen

First Row: Dorothy Brigs, Stanley Ammann, Alfonso Perez, Jerry Loomis, Jack Knee, Wilbur' Nickel, Paul Miller, Ferclie La Gree, and Duane Barker, Second Row: Jerry Nichol, Jerry Stroud, Tony Emu, Kermit Smith, Benny Rawlins, Dick Chapman, Jim McFarlane, Jon Simms, and Randy Harmison. Third Row: Allan Nickel, Jerry Olden, Richard Williams, Loren Oblcy, Glen Hershbcrger, Loren Anderson, and Randy Schmidt. OCC2 The Newton Vocal Department under the direction of John D. Davidson concluded a busy year With many public appearances to their credit. The choral group's first program was given December 14 and was composed of various Christmas selections. The chorus also made sev- eral Christmas recordings for radio stations KJRG and KAKE which were played during the Christmas Week. Thirty-six members of the chorus attended the District music festival April second and third, usic where several students received superior and excellent ratings. The chorus gave a Valentine assembly con- sisting of love songs appropriate to the occasion. They also gave several other assemblies during the year. The entire group journeyed to Kingman April 9 for an exchange assembly for the King- man High School. All in all, the department had a very success- ful season With their appearances.
