PALMER HGUSE ,, FF fs MICHAEL B. GRADONE Homemafter A5 Maine goei, 10 goei the nation. American Political Maxim circa 1888 Back in 1888, Maine was, poltically speaking, a trend-setter. At New- ton High School in the 60's it's Palmer House, the first house to sponsor a dance and originator of a House Ski Trip. Mr. Gradone, the new house- master, enthusiastically pressed on to New Frontiers, supported by loyal councilmen. This year's impressive measures included a sophomore recep- tion, two cake sales, a toy drive, a Christmas Party, a winter outing, a commons room workday, a rotation-system honor study, and-most radical of all-a coke machine! Palmer House also sponsored a Folk Singing Assembly. Tony Saletan, just returned from a trip to Africa and Asia, sang folk songs from the exotic East, from pioneering Israel, and from awakening Africa. Palmer students, true to the spirit of their house, joined in the choruses with enthusiasm. BEALS HOUSE Let the far and the new unite . . ' Thomas Paine With its many diversified interests and activities, Beals House spread itself out far and near, at the same time retaining an unquestionable unity. The physical characteristics of the House were also far and near. Students were quite proud of their split-level house, and after X-blocks, those from distant 1324 and 1328 were crushed when they were instructed to use the halls of another house instead of the lecture hall of Beals House for passing. Such students wished so much to unite the far and the near in Beals House that the pressure they applied to the notorious traffic squad was often observed to be sufficient for the loyal students to gain passage over some of Beals House's sacred land. Numerous Beals House activities included tutorials for seniors, ser- vice projects in the West End, tremendous support and success in sports, intresting speakers on controversial subjects, a Cusuallyj efficient traffic squad, a distinct bookcover and coat-of-arms, a house newspaper, and a Music From Many Lands Show. Students from far and near houses often united in Beals House to enjoy a welcomed addition to the Commons room-a coke machine! House Council ,,,.,f-W' ' N. RILEY HOUSE There are too many words in prose, and they take up alto- gether too much room. Edwin Arlington Robinson So, with apologies to Keats, we give you only an ode. Ode on Riley House Thou most spirited of houses, Thou who doth control the lower floors of building two, the green around the path- ways numerous. Thou to whom so many of us t give three years, Thou. Green is thine air and round is the pedestal upon which the leprechaun rests. But more than this, is life within thy halls, smile- fringed gaiety. Fair house, of green, and orange and black, who didst originate the sale of Crumbles Golden, And didst sport the day of Smiley Riley. Bold House, who entered sports with challenge in. Who came and left each game with grim spirit. Bold House. She cannot melt away. She cannot be forgotten while they fill the house with green spirit and responsibility.
