Batchelder I-Ioufemafter The med key if fzluffzyx briglatf' Benjamin Franklin Benjamin Franklins words, uttered over two hundred years ago, came true this year in Barry House. Barry was centered around the key of suc- cess which hung nobly in the center of the commons room, reminding everyone of the many activities it opened. The X-block film forum, for example, provided interesting films on subjects ranging from politics in South America to Ghandhi. The key unlocked student spirit, enough to make the Barry House sale of pens, containing the school motto, a big success. In December, Barry House honor roll students sipped cider and ate donuts under the brightly shining Key. Each term a banner was award- ed to the homeroom with the greatest number of people on the honor roll. The contented member of Barry House was easily recognized any place in the school. He was interested and interesting, active and success- ful. His smiling face seemed to say, I am bigger than anything tht can happen to me . . I am in the house and I have the Key. CHARLES F. BACCDN HCDUSE A mfznit home if bit castle. james Otis Upon the wide green of the Newton High School campus stands the palatial Building III. There, the proper Bacon House Newtonians claimed complete jurisdiction. Clearly, the IBM room, the College Records Office, and the cafeteria were merely tolerated guests in Building III with space provided for them only through the grace of Bacon House. Bacon House, home of the intellectual aristocrat, is the only house at NHS with an oriental rug and a fine art exhibit in its commons room. The halls of Building III are lined with colorful historical prints, and a price- less painting of Columbus is located in room 528. Bacon House also supported the Theater Arts Center of NHS and claimed prestige from the fact that the Chief Executive of the school chose to locate his offices within the house limits. This year Bacon House organized a series of fine assemblies including a Christmas party, a cake sale, a Folk Sing, and a patriotic X-block clean-up campaign. Making use of its intellectual and cultural attributes, Bacon House, this year, proved itself a masterful Leader among Houses. House Council Carl L. BEALS HOUSE Let the far and the new unite . . ' Thomas Paine With its many diversified interests and activities, Beals House spread itself out far and near, at the same time retaining an unquestionable unity. The physical characteristics of the House were also far and near. Students were quite proud of their split-level house, and after X-blocks, those from distant 1324 and 1328 were crushed when they were instructed to use the halls of another house instead of the lecture hall of Beals House for passing. Such students wished so much to unite the far and the near in Beals House that the pressure they applied to the notorious traffic squad was often observed to be sufficient for the loyal students to gain passage over some of Beals House's sacred land. Numerous Beals House activities included tutorials for seniors, ser- vice projects in the West End, tremendous support and success in sports, intresting speakers on controversial subjects, a Cusuallyj efficient traffic squad, a distinct bookcover and coat-of-arms, a house newspaper, and a Music From Many Lands Show. Students from far and near houses often united in Beals House to enjoy a welcomed addition to the Commons room-a coke machine! House Council ,,,.,f-W' ' N.
