BACCDN HCDUSE A mfznit home if bit castle. james Otis Upon the wide green of the Newton High School campus stands the palatial Building III. There, the proper Bacon House Newtonians claimed complete jurisdiction. Clearly, the IBM room, the College Records Office, and the cafeteria were merely tolerated guests in Building III with space provided for them only through the grace of Bacon House. Bacon House, home of the intellectual aristocrat, is the only house at NHS with an oriental rug and a fine art exhibit in its commons room. The halls of Building III are lined with colorful historical prints, and a price- less painting of Columbus is located in room 528. Bacon House also supported the Theater Arts Center of NHS and claimed prestige from the fact that the Chief Executive of the school chose to locate his offices within the house limits. This year Bacon House organized a series of fine assemblies including a Christmas party, a cake sale, a Folk Sing, and a patriotic X-block clean-up campaign. Making use of its intellectual and cultural attributes, Bacon House, this year, proved itself a masterful Leader among Houses. House Council Carl L. x XJ ADAMS HOUSE iff'- Francis J. Foster Housemaster '. Each house may determine the ruler of its proceedings . . . U. S. Constitution Adams House, under its excellent new constitution, this year made and carried out its own rules. However, as Housemaster Foster says, the houses primary responsibility is not to determine rules for the student body, but to help them to understand themselves and their place in mod- ern society. As the long list of Adams House members prominent in school activities, athletics and scholarship will testify, Mr. Foster and the Adams House staff have certainly fulfilled their responsibilities well. A spirit of individualism has been an important part of the Adams House atmosphere this year. The House Council adopted a fairly conserva- tive attitude, and, after careful investigation of all the pros and cons, de- cided, finally, not to institute some of the new innovations, such as coke machines, that the other houses did this year. The House Civics Committee organized a series of after school discussions, open to the whole student body and the faculty, on school, local and national problems. We are sure that this spirit of individualism, fostered by the housemaster, will lead many of the Adams House students to success in the future. Among the many other activities sponsored by Adams House this year were three assemblies, one of which dipped into the vast house reser- voir of theatrical and musical talent, and a holiday party that jammed the commons room and corridor with dancing and singing students. Yes, we think it is safe to say that, like the other five houses at New- ton High, Adams House is the best. House Council Q ,X b P ui .Y wi SS f -i ,l if j Ll E 5 Q is at N tXJ Tx is it I X s., ? BARRY HCUSE Y 'sn Richard D. Batchelder I-Ioufemafter The med key if fzluffzyx briglatf' Benjamin Franklin Benjamin Franklins words, uttered over two hundred years ago, came true this year in Barry House. Barry was centered around the key of suc- cess which hung nobly in the center of the commons room, reminding everyone of the many activities it opened. The X-block film forum, for example, provided interesting films on subjects ranging from politics in South America to Ghandhi. The key unlocked student spirit, enough to make the Barry House sale of pens, containing the school motto, a big success. In December, Barry House honor roll students sipped cider and ate donuts under the brightly shining Key. Each term a banner was award- ed to the homeroom with the greatest number of people on the honor roll. The contented member of Barry House was easily recognized any place in the school. He was interested and interesting, active and success- ful. His smiling face seemed to say, I am bigger than anything tht can happen to me . . I am in the house and I have the Key. CHARLES F. LUMMIS House Council Scared: Sandy Wanburg, Ken Kasargian, Jeffrey Hahn, Dan Goldstein, Sue Wilkie.
