LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT Training if everything . . . Mark Twain There are over. 100 languages spoken in the world today. This necessitates a mastery of foreign tongues which, in turn, necessitates school lan- guage departments. Today, perhaps more than ever before, in the history of the United States, it is important that we understand the foreigners news- paper, his novel, prayer, and street cry. Realizing this, the Newton High Language Department has constantly experimented with newer and faster methods of teaching languages. Sixteen foreign language teachers taught 1200 Newton High students 1500 language elections this past year. The language lab, perfected and made available to more students, served also as an example to visiting educators. Kennedy And that's also the reason why Newton High School has a Reading Clinic. This year, the clinic served a two-fold purpose. First, it offered remedial reading courses to students having difficulty with reading skills ranging from pronunciation and spelling to comprehension and study methods. Sec- ondly, the clinic offered developmental reading courses for students who, although good readers, wished to increase their speed, comprehension, and vocabulary. Many seeking help from the clinic re- ceived individual instruction as well as encourage- ment to Wake Up and Read! 1 rw N E Q
