NEWTON FREE LIBRARY NEWTON, MASS. . . . for great schools are little societies, where a boy of any observation may see in epitome what he will afterwards find in the world at large. These are the words of Henry Fielding, author of Iorepla Andrewr. Our theme is an enlargement upon Fielding's statement. We believe that Newton High School is so diverse in its people, courses, and traditions that it is a little world or microcosm complete in itself. In this world we have spent three years of our lives, and now, as we venture into the Outer Space of the outside world, the 1961 Newtonian is our. record of an era in our lives and that of Newton High School. We have divided the yearbook into sections each of which describes a dif- ferent aspect of the world of Newton High School. These sections are entitled: Government, Division of Labor,'Arts, Sports, Social Structure, Literature, Philoso- phy, and Senior Citizens. We hope that the reader will use his imagination to fill in all the details of our analogy. There is a serious message to this yearbook. We have a civilization in the world of Newton -High School. This civilizaiton has reached great spiritual heights in the past. Its progress has been recognized by the outside world. Our civiliza- tion was enjoying its prime when it was split in two. We are still enjoying our prime. But let us never forget the words of Arnold Toynbee. He has said that civilization is a movement and not a condition, a voyage and not a harbor. He has reminded us that all past civilizations have broken down. Let us not complacently assume that Newton High School is immune to the danger of breaking down - no civilization is. We must keep Newton High School from this danger, we must continue our voyage. This school year has been' a period of readjustment, a period during which we have learned to accept the idea of two high schools. We have done so with the help of responsible modern leaders. It is the hope of the 1961 Nawtdnian that Newton High School will always have responsible modern leaders and serious modern students. For if we have mature and intelligent leaders and followers, we can make sure that our civilization is a voyage, and that the little world of Newton High School is a leader in the field of education. 1
