MR. RAYMOND A. GREEN A great, tall man ambles up the corridor, head bowed in thought. A friendly man sits behind his desk, listens quietly, gives help with emphatic force. Here is a dignified Mikado or an enthusiastic supervisor. A man, our representative to the outside world, whose hair has turned more gray in ounr service. His strolling walk takes him many places searching out the best and the why's and wherefore's of student life. To us, Mr. Green per- sonfies1Newton High School. We will remember him many years from now as a man who loved books, travel, fishing, and people. MR. LEO J. BARRY Mr. Leo J. Barry, one of the administrative vice-principals of Newton Hi h School, graduated from Bates College and has done graduate work at Boston University, Columbia University, and Harvard University. Mr. Barr has taught at Danvers Massachusetts, at Northeastern University, at the Boston Centre for Adult Education, and has been a Visiting Lecturer at Harvard University. Mr. Barry became a member of the United States Navy in 1944, was placed in the communications department, and assigned to the Philippines. After V. J. Day, as editor of the Navy News, he was a correspondent at the War Crimes Trials of the Generals Yamasita and Homma. During his ab- sence Mrs. Barry took his place as English teacher at Newton High. During the past five years, Mr. Barry has served as director of radio of the Newton Public Schools and editor of the Newton School Age. Aside from these organizations he is President of the Boston Bates College Alumni and actively participates in many other school and community organiza- tions. In his spare time Mr. Barry enjoys golfing and sports with his son. MR. WILLIAM LAURITS This year, Newton High School opened its doors to welcome Mr. William Laurits as its assistant principal. However, Mr. Laurits also assumed the directorship of the Newton Junior College. fln this capacity he was busier in the Junior College than in the High School., His time and energy were devoted to teaching psychology, directin class pro rams, arranging student activities, and recruiting new students. qfhe High School may ex- pect to see more of Mr. Laurits in the future, though. After Mr. Laurits raduated from Yale University, he served four years in the Navy during sforld War ll. Later, he obtained his Master of Arts degree from the University of Chicago. Before coming to Harvard Grad- uate School of Education as assistant to the Dean, Mr. Laurits taught mathe- matics at Elgin High School and Junior College in Illinois. Thus we have both past and resent of Mr. William Laurits. Let us hope that the future will bring him happiness and enjoyment at Newton High School. MR. HARRY L. WALEN Not everyone has been a deputy sheriff, a semi-professional skier, and an ardent camper during one life time. However, Mr. Walen is such a hard- working man here at Newton High School, he is no longer able to enjoy many of these pastimes. A Newton boy, Mr. Walen attended Bigelow Grade School, and then Newton High School where he was editor-in-chief of the 1933 New- tonian. With a cum laude A.B. degree in English letters, Mr. Walen grad- uhated from Harvard University. Later he received his Master's degree t ere. Mr. Walen's profession is teaching. ln that capacity he has taught at the Los Alamos boys' preparatory school in New Mexico, and also at Groton. From 1946-1951 Mr. Walen taught in both Newton Junior Colle e and Newton High School. However, as Administrative Assistant, Mr. gwalen teaches only two high school classes and the afternoon Journalism Class. Besides his present-day hobbies of reading and going camping, Mr. Walen enjoys presenting Kodachrome slides of his many interesting trips.
