and a Newton l-ligh has a legend, an identity all its own. Its outward signs are a red hat and Blood 'n Thunder at pep assemblies, its deeper qualities are those of loyalty and ambi- tion and drive. lt has been shared by thou- sands of students over the years. And it is embodied in one man, Pop Lynn. l-le is personal, and a little different for everyone. l-le is enthusiasm, inflexibility, and patient suffering at schedule changes or lost activity cards. l-le is discipline, kindness, and concern for the development of young lives. l-le is the intense man who has stamped his character upon every brick of his institution. For forty-three years, the school has been his life. l-le has watched it grow in size and in repu- tation. l-le has seen the senior classes get a little larger each year. l-le has shared in its glories-and its defeats. He has applauded its scholars and inwardly wept over those whose lives were wasted. lf a student thinks of Pop as solemn, he is right. If he thinks of him as jovial, he is right. And if the name Pop l.ynn brings to mind a scholar, an athlete, or a friend, the image is still correct. A student may or may not have really gotten to know Pop as it is impos- sible to know a great sprinter before he runs the mile. Pop was so absorbed in his work that man and task became one. l-lis train of thought is inseparable from the goal he sought. Only in this way could he have achieved such triumph over the years. Only in this way could he have built such respect as to cause his students to say with pride, I know him. This is the man we call 'F'op. ' W As we complete our high school careers, the classes of '67,.'68, and all the rest will dis- solve into individuals, each going his separate way. But which one of us, twenty years from now, will not be proud to reach for that aged yearbook, brushing the dust from its faded cover, and opening it, point to aphotograph and say, That's him. and I used to know him. l knew 'Pop' Lynn.
