Grout in appreciation for his service to the school as a debate coach and teacher and for his contributions to the educa- tion of the youth of Newton during the past fourteen years, we dedicate the I960 NEWTONIA. A teacher with patience and interest in students' potential, Mr. Grout has helped us develop our ability to think, to express ourselves, and to evaluate our efforts. He compiled an excellent record, climaxed this year by winning the state debate contest and qualifying for the national tournament, which was held in Los Angeles in july. Under his direction, three teams have won this honor. Newton High School debate teams have reached state finals in twelve out of fourteen years with his supervision, winning the championship three times and runners-up twice. The debaters have received division one ratings in the Iowa High School Speech Association tourney, two teams won the Iowa State Univer- sity tournamentg two the Coe College Invitationalg and one the Mason City Tri-State tourney. Mr. Grout was also play director in the high school from M46 until l955. I-Ie is a past president of the speech-drama division of the Iowa State Education Association and of the Newton Teachers' As- sociation. For five years, he was the Iowa Chairman of the National Forensic League. Congratulations, Mr. Grout, for helping our school establish this enviable reputation in the field of forensics. - ,hm T4 I W . 5 .-Z ,. I-v 4-- - ,MMM .
