Notionoi Athletic Honor Society The National Athletic Honor Society, organized in 1925, is a nationwide organiza- tion for high school athletics. A boy that has been elected to this society has attained the highest award possible for high school athletes. The purpose of the organization is to foster high scholarship among athletes, to stimulate balanced training, to elevate ideals of sportsmanship and develop more out- standing leaders. To achieve this honor a boy must have shown the highest type of citizenship and sportsmanshipg his grades for three con- secutive semesters must be a C average or higherg and he must have earned a letter in either a major or minor sport. The different sports in which major letters are won are football, basketball, track, golf, tennis, and wrestling. These letters are given 46 to those who have participated the required number of quarters and have received suf- ficient number of points to be eligible. Be- sides these qualifications, personality charac- teristics which are emphasized are Leader- ship, Character, Scholarship, Service and Sportsmanship. As this is the National Athletic Honor Society, a boy may rightly feel proud to be a wearer of the emblem of such an organiza- tion. It means that wherever he may go in this country, he will be recognized as a good representative of high school athletics and scholarship. This year the organization is composed of two returning members, besides nine others who are new to its ranks. From this number four are seniors and seven are juniors. Although graduation took a large part of the Cardinal track power, indications point to the fact that this year's trackmen will be better balanced than the 1949 crew. At the State Indoor meet at Iowa City, Newton placed nineteenth, unable to show any real strength. However, the following week the squad placed fourth at the Valley Relays. Dick Starr received a first in the high jump, going over the bar at 5 ft. 7 in. The other Newton points were scored by the two-mile relay, and the broad jump by Don Ringgenberg. Again going up a step, the Card thinclads placed second in the Osky Relays. In addition to the mile relay in which Newton pulled down second place, the Cardinals garnered points in three of the other relays. In field events lack Fry heaved the shot to drag down third, while Dave Hutchins laced second in the football throw behind Ritter ofp Grinnell. Many of the performances of the Card cindermen were very encouraging, and according to all hereto- fore indications, the Newton thinclads should have a very good season. As the annual goes to press the results of the other track meets of the season are unknown. Thinclads warm up during practice for a meet. 5-1 if. ii Sli lack VVyatt goes over the top. 7950 Track The Newton sprinters will participate in at least ten and possihlx thirteen meets this spring. The tentative schedule is as follows April 8- April 15- April 21- April 25- April May - May 6- May May 15- May 19- May May 27- MANAGERS Student managers for the Cardinal cindermen this year are Craig VVright, Rodell Lightfoot, Lenly Cearhart, and Ronnie Iarnigan. SU lNlARYANNE EVANS Salutcltorian The motto our class has chosen is, What we are to be, we are becomingf' One of the most important factors in what we are becoming is the school. The habits and characteristics we have formed during school years are the ones we will probably have all our lives. For the school, our graduation will merely mean another job finished, another class graduating, but the school's impression on us is one that cannot he fully evaluated. Our school has given us the tools with which to build our futures. True, the strength of the tools, and their size, depends upon the industriousness of each individual in securing themg but, nevertheless, they have been there waiting to be grasped. W'e have had numerous opportunities which cannot be fully appreciated. Many opportunities will still wait for us when we are ready to find them. Whether we go on to school or find some other line of occupation, the influence of what we have had here at Newton High School will be felt time after time. Our years as a group will soon be ended. The members of our class will be scattered over many different places and activities, but each one will find his niche in the cogs of the world's machinery. Each will have his own part to play. We have been given our chance. We only hope to be able to give something in return. lil! Valedictorian Twelve years we have worked toward it- graduationl And now that the time to leave New- ton High has really come, we do so with mixed feelings. For these years have not been spent without many deep influences upon us, and it is natural that our happiness of reaching graduation be tinged with regret. NVe feel happiness for a thing accomplished, regret for a thing that is doneg eagerness for a new sort of life, sadness that this old familiar life is no more ours to live, excitement for a new feeling of independence, and apprehension of being on our own in an unsettled world. But may the least of our feeling be resignation because, though graduation marks the end of high school for us, it is actually the beginning of a new and fuller life. And may the accomplish- ments we have made here not be laurels to rest upon, but, instead, the prods to make us fulfill the promise we have shown. Together as a class we have reached one goal. Now as individuals may we each make for our- self security, success, and happiness. NORINNE SHEPHERD SENIOR DELTA MU DELTA How I: Iivuiis, Shcplicrd, Ihnsniorc. The annual Christmas concert was a part of their work, and it showed a great accomplishment. Many solos, and ensembles, besides the entire choir made the performance one of the most beautiful ever given. Also, the choir sang at some of the various assemblies during the year, including Thanks- giving, Christmas, and graduation. May 2, Newton played host to the Tri-City Festival which included about 225 voices, was under the direction of Maynerd Klein from thc University of Michigan. After a day of work and practice, a very beautiful concert was given in the evening. Many of this year's singers also participated in the All-State chorus concert which was given in the fall.
