To our Alma Mater we bequeath our undying love and gratitude for all she has done to train us in lessons of understanding and learning from the carefree thoughtlessness of our freshman year to the more serious and appreciative attitude of today. We give and bequeath to our beloved principal, Mr. Savage, our sincere affection, our deepest reverence, our heartiest gratitude, and the whole unlimited wealth of our eternal memory. To you dear faculty, we leave our love, affection and gratitude for your willing and untiring efforts to help us in anything we attempted to do. To you also, we leave peace of mind, at least, until another Senior Class returns. Juniors, we leave you all our intellectual attainments through our school years, surely need all these and many more qualities. To the Sophomores, our si :r class, we bequeath our studious qualities and the our interest in their future successes. To the Freshmen, we bequeath all the optimism and self-assurance of our Sophomore year. We bequeath 0 those coming after us all those intangible things which go to make life great, good, happy and beautiful. The following may seem but trifling bequests, but we hope that they may be accepted, not as worthless things lavishly thrown away, because we can no longer keep them, but asvaluable assets to those who may receive them, as a continued reminder of the generosity of heart dis- played in our free and full bestowal: Susie Best leaves her ability to stand up for her rights to Edwin Edwards. Marilyn Bryan leaves her ability to chew six sticks of chewing gum at one time to Morris Porter. Zilphia Britt leaves her place in Mr. Savage's car, which she used to and from the ballgames, to Edna Westbrook. Dorothy Cox leaves her ability to make A's without studying to Billy Ray Jackson. Peggy Graham leaves her ability to laugh and to speak what she thinks to Betty Rose. Blonde Jackson leaves her ability to act with ease in the presence of books to Lela Jean Baker. Janet Jordan leaves her ability to act as a child in all the class plays to Celine Royals. Maude Jordan leaves her place on the basketball team to Margie Scott. Carolyn Lassiter leaves her long hair to Maude Gregory. Elsie McCullen leaves three inches of her height and some of her hair to Ruby Jordan. Charles Strickland leaves one of his big feet to Helen Faye Lee and the other to Donald Lawhorn. Shirley Thornton leaves her dark complexion to Frances Warren. for you will assurance of Dean Thornton leaves his friendly ways with the girls to Billy Herring. To all the Juniors, we the Seniors leave all the privileges that we were supposed to have and didn't. To the Lunchroom, we leave a new recipe book in hopes that it will be used. Last comes the one thinghard for us to part with. To our successors we must leave our places in the hearts and thoughts of our principal and teachers. We trust that the class of 1954 will ap- preciate this as deeply as we have and that it may be the most precious possession, as it has been ours, and the one we are most reluctant to hand over to them: In witness thereof, we, the class of 1953, the testators, have to this our will set our hands and seal this the twenty-second day of May. PROPHECY Last night I lay gazing at the stars and thinking of graduation and wondering what the future held for me and my classmates-- So I dipped into this future Just as far as I could see I saw a vision of my classmates and who they'd turned out to be. Right here in Newton Grove Many changes had been made In the school, the bank, post office toog And a foundation had been laid For a new school building, and if you please Charles Strickland is in charge with the greatest of ease, A successful contractor he has become He is in great demand by everyone. The bank has grown larger and to my surprise Dean Thornton is president in spite of his size. And would you believe it? Well, yes I see Peggy Graham has been Post Mistress since '53 She's married now and settled down and helps to publish a newspaper for the town. In Wayne County, Well I declare! Maude Jordan is Superintendent of the welfare And in Goldsboro where she now lives The most of her time she cheerfully gives To helping others who are in need She's happy in it, yes indeed, Into the future I reach deeper yet And what I see I shall never forget. For Dorothy Cox has had her tum She now has the job for which she yearned As secretary to some great man I believe it is a Congress man.
