64155 Mop ec? The period of 1939-1960 will do down in history books as the dawn of a new Golden Age. Hitler, Mayor Hague. Mussolini, Roosevelt, and most of the other dictators had lost their power, and their lands were ruled under ideal democratic fsmall dnl regimes. However, the good people of Massachusetts could not enjoy this era of harmony and joy. True, they still elected a Republican governor every two years, but this man of the peoples choice was no more than a Hgurehead. For a quarter of a century the citizens of the Commonwealth had trembled at the name that had become synonymous with ruthless might: Frank Goodwin, the Registrar of Motor Vehicles. The Goodwin will getcha if you don't watch out! was the whispered warning which instilled dread in our hearts. XVe had experienced a reign of terror which would have done Stalin's heart good. The Goodwin was unheard of in the other fortyfseven states because none dared mention his name for fear that his secret agents would bring reprisal. The outside world considered Massachusetts an ideal state because the official taxes were so low: however. the taxes were low only because the dcspot's agents supported the state by monstrous speeding fines. After fines, the Goodwins favorite weapon was social ostracisin for his opponents: he brought this about by depriving these opponents of their driving licenses for long enough periods of time so that by the time thcse persons are in circulation again, everyone has forgotten them. No politician had ever dared to cross up the terrible Goodwin. Yet one night in l959 as Richard Henry, assistant curator of ornithology at the McGurk Institute of Nature, was hiking through the wilds of South Boston in search of new types of queer birds. he was accosted by Bud the Brute Gahan, who he knew had become one of the state's most powerful political bosses. After the customary greetings of former schoolmates, Bud invited Dick to come and have a coke with him in a nearby restaurant. Something strange in 'ABud's manner told Dick that he might hnd more queer birds by following Gahan than he would by scanning the skies. He was surprised when Bud led him through the restaurant itself into a dimly-lit back room: but was even more surprised when. as his eyes became accustomed to the light, he recognized all his old classmates at Country Day. Their somber rniens informed Dick that something extraordinary was afoot. Imagine how he shuddered with terror when he heard that the Goodwin's downfall was being planned by this sinister group, formerly so carefree and unconcerned with politics so long as Republicans were elected. Gahan now explained how his smouldering hatred of the Goodwin had burst into flame when the Goodwin refused to appoint some of 'ABud's friends to juicy positions. XVhat's this country coming to. anyway. Bud wanted to know, W-5136s
