owarc! ,Ij'ealalenicA Oecfef -H Hundred Circle, VVellesley Hills. Mass. HOXVIE He that hath a beard is more than a youth. -Shakespeare Born luly 9, 1921 Harvard Student Council, 1938-39g lllinig Dramatic Club, 1937-393 Football, 1937-393 Captain, 1939: Latin Club, 1937394 Megaphone, 1937-393 Editor-in-Chief, 1933-395 Clec Club, 'Q 1938-39. 'U' Undoubtedly the most popular fellow in the Senior Class is that little man with the six inches of hair, Howie Oedel. His eitervescent good humor keeps the entire class in good spirits. Howie came to us two years ago, and immediately joined the Megaphone staff and the Dramatic Club. Last fall, that tearing back who zoomed around left end for innumerable touchdowns was Captain Oedel, who had never played football before. In the spring of '38, he batted 1000 on the baseball team tin one time at batj. A'Pro'del they used to call him. This year, Howie wrote almost all the material which went to make up a most successful group of Megaphones . He stole the show in The C-host Train. as Teddy, the English detective, and it was as much Howie's punch as anything else which made the C. D. S, dance a rip-roaring success. Howie's character was recognized by the students and faculty. when he was elected to Illini and the Student Council this year. But 'tllowien has two aversions: The C. D. S. Creek-letter fraternity and the Third Floor Protective Association. VVel1, for -- who the -- wrote 'Carolyn' all over the wall?! Say, Henry, who's the wise guy? And where's my brief case? For -- -- V' Then, five minutes later: 'Tm sorryg I'm going to be a good little boy and not swear any more. But I don't see whats so funny about -- hm-m-m-in --. I can easily see l'm not appreciated. But for Pete's sake --. A sudden dead silence as an eye is seen peering through a small aperture in the plate-glass door - lf thats Cahan again, I'm going to --. Despite his troubles. Howie has made his corner bright, and it is with pleasant memories that I will look back upon a most happy year with him as my roommate. VVC all wish him best of luck at Harvard. 'dlflev

QCAGPJ JQFP 110 VVoodward Street, Newton Highlands, Mass. Beat it out in a minor key. -Ella Fitzgerald Born lVl31'Cl'l 28, Alnhefgt Football Team, 193638, Hockey Team, 1937-39g Baseball Team, l93T-39g Megaphone Board, 1938-39, C-lee Club, Accompanist, l936-39, Dramatic Club, 1936-39, Orchestra, 1936-39. Dick injected into this class a spirit of joyiality that remains with us yet. Always ready to do anything, Dick has proved valuable in football, hockey. and baseball. Dick does not, however, conline his prowess to athletics alone, but is the mainstay of the Clee Club, with his excellent accompaniment. Dick is the best pianist Country Day School has known. and should go far in music. Dick is ever popular with young and old alike, swinging or really playing the classics to please. His fertile brain relaxes from diligent study about once a week to concoct some especially brilliant plan to annoy Oedel. Most noteworthy results of a year in the Senior studies are marked by various doors seen on and oft Oedel's study: and Billy Bones expedition into the classics. In spite of this seeming leyity, Dick does get serious, and really does work. Dick entered Country Day when we had studied many things which he had not, and he has worked hard in overcoming that disadvantage. He deserves credit for what he has done, and I am sure he will get credit for what he is going to do. '4f596v

V. ferisf '- . -xi .c Carrying on another family tradition, Tats is the third in his family to be graduated from Country Day. He is certainly the hardest-working boy in our class. but he is not a grind. He enters extra-curricular activities with the same vim that characterizes all he undertakes. XVith Tats as circulation manager, the Mega- phone was pulled from its depression slump to reappear with many pages and the old-time binding. As treasurer of the Dramatic Club a year ago he made a financial success of a none too promising play. He enters into the kid-stuff that gocs on in Senior studies, and is as ready as the next fellow to annoy Howie , Mere marks do not show Tats' true ability, for he works hard but docs not pull down the top grades. XVe are all glad to have known and worked with such a swell fellow. I-Ie is well liked by boys and masters alike, and will surely go far with the will and the work that he puts into every activity. galley
