SENIOR CLASS PROPI-IECY Did you ever want to know what you would be doing tomorrow, or all the tomorrows to come? In case you do, just let me know and I will look through my crystal door into the future and predict all for you. Let us now step through and see what the members of the class of '45 are doing. Up front, as usual we see Kathleen Sigmon and Ed Schrum competing for high honors in the world of music and literature-the classics, naturally. Also in the higher-ups of music is Evonne Sanders. She always did want to be where she could look down on people more successfully. Betty Sigmon and Vivian Furr are together and are spatting as usual. They are the private secretaries of the President of the Newton Rayon Mills who is none other than our own Bill Price. Everything changes, even Radio Announcers-Lena Walling is the chief news Commentator and Gloria Wilkinson reports on the Woman's World. Trying to herd his wandering sheep into the fold, the most Reverend Joe Lowrance is having a little trouble with those two well-known honkey-tonkers, Ralph Coley and Mack Burgess. who are still up to their old tricks. In that group known as Bachelor Girl School Teachers we see Kathleen Matthews at Balls Creek, Marceline Spencer at Banoak and Genevieve Trott at Claremont. As head of stall' at the Catawba Memorial Hospital is Dr. William Hunt. As head of his nursing staff we see Shirley Abernethy bossing Phyllis Lail and Geraldine Wilkinson. We see in the 'lBig City of Conover none other than Nancy Isenhower as head of the Soap Factory. We look farther into our crystal door and see that Mr. and Mrs. D'avid Corpening are entertaining with a bridge party in honor of the Misses Betty Jo Bolick and Betty Jane Gantt who are leaving soon for New York where they will be Power's Models. Mary Frances Harvell is seen coaching basketball at Mountain View and rooming with her old schoolmate Kate Smith who is teaching there. Now let's look farther into the crystal door: Here we see Isaac Kuhn and Tommy Bass, well-known speakers on the World of Tomorrow. Isaac is taking the optimistic side and Tommy the pessimistic viewpoint. At that well-known Dime Store in Newton-Cline's, we see Dorothy Curlee as manager. The light grows dim and we must step back through the door into the world of today or be forever caught in the world of tomorrow. SENIOR CLASS HISTORY Five years ago in the Fall of nineteen hundred and forty, one hundred and thirty-seven scared, starry-eyed. young boys and girls stood on the threshold of a new phase in their lives. New doors toprosperity opened for them. The hour glass was set in motion and marked time for the class for Eve years. In nineteen forty and forty-one, the Freshmen selected Betty Jean Kunkle to lead them for a year of victory over uncertainty and inexperience. This year the new ninth month and l2th grade regulation went into effect. A three months' vacation was welcomed by everyone. I The year nineteen forty-one and forty-two found the sands of the hour glass still marking the days and months of another year. Ninety students came through the doors of Newton- Conover High with greater confidence than the year before. They were led through this phase of school work by Ralph Herman Coley. In the year nineteen forty-two and forty-three, sixty-eight tenth graders successfully com- pleted the required subjects, without too many failures, and managed to gather a small amount of knowledge as they, went about the tasks, and enjoyed themselves in basketball and football. They were led through this year by Ben T'unny Kincaid. The year forty-three and forty-four found the same class with a new perspective. The Juniors felt as if they could lick anyone. It was the responsibility of this class to publish the Hi-Life and to plan the Junior-Senior Banquet and Dance. The class was very capably led by Raenelle Bolick. Although the class had diminished in number Conly forty-eight nowl it was ready for anything which might happen. The sands in the hour glass have slowly ebbed. The Seniors, who are twenty-eight in number. are anxiously awaiting graduation day. The Seniors' greatest responsibility toward their fellow students is getting together material for an annual that will serve as an inspiration to the ones who follow in their footsteps. This annual is being paid for by subscriptions, by ads from the merchants, mills, etc., of Newton. Conover, and Hickory, and by funds received from the Senior store, by selling ice-cream. and by giving a Senior Play. The leader through the greatest year of the Seniors' High School career is Ed Schrum. The members of the class of forty-five leave you with the hope that you will enjoy the life in Newton-Conover High as much as they have enjoyed it. MARCELINE SPENCER, Historian.
