New doors toprosperity opened for them. The hour glass was set in motion and marked time for the class for Eve years. In nineteen forty and forty-one, the Freshmen selected Betty Jean Kunkle to lead them for a year of victory over uncertainty and inexperience. This year the new ninth month and l2th grade regulation went into effect. A three months' vacation was welcomed by everyone. I The year nineteen forty-one and forty-two found the sands of the hour glass still marking the days and months of another year. Ninety students came through the doors of Newton- Conover High with greater confidence than the year before. They were led through this phase of school work by Ralph Herman Coley. In the year nineteen forty-two and forty-three, sixty-eight tenth graders successfully com- pleted the required subjects, without too many failures, and managed to gather a small amount of knowledge as they, went about the tasks, and enjoyed themselves in basketball and football. They were led through this year by Ben T'unny Kincaid. The year forty-three and forty-four found the same class with a new perspective. The Juniors felt as if they could lick anyone. It was the responsibility of this class to publish the Hi-Life and to plan the Junior-Senior Banquet and Dance. The class was very capably led by Raenelle Bolick. Although the class had diminished in number Conly forty-eight nowl it was ready for anything which might happen. The sands in the hour glass have slowly ebbed. The Seniors, who are twenty-eight in number. are anxiously awaiting graduation day. The Seniors' greatest responsibility toward their fellow students is getting together material for an annual that will serve as an inspiration to the ones who follow in their footsteps. This annual is being paid for by subscriptions, by ads from the merchants, mills, etc., of Newton. Conover, and Hickory, and by funds received from the Senior store, by selling ice-cream. and by giving a Senior Play. The leader through the greatest year of the Seniors' High School career is Ed Schrum. The members of the class of forty-five leave you with the hope that you will enjoy the life in Newton-Conover High as much as they have enjoyed it. MARCELINE SPENCER, Historian. In case you do, just let me know and I will look through my crystal door into the future and predict all for you. Let us now step through and see what the members of the class of '45 are doing. Up front, as usual we see Kathleen Sigmon and Ed Schrum competing for high honors in the world of music and literature-the classics, naturally. Also in the higher-ups of music is Evonne Sanders. She always did want to be where she could look down on people more successfully. Betty Sigmon and Vivian Furr are together and are spatting as usual. They are the private secretaries of the President of the Newton Rayon Mills who is none other than our own Bill Price. Everything changes, even Radio Announcers-Lena Walling is the chief news Commentator and Gloria Wilkinson reports on the Woman's World. Trying to herd his wandering sheep into the fold, the most Reverend Joe Lowrance is having a little trouble with those two well-known honkey-tonkers, Ralph Coley and Mack Burgess. who are still up to their old tricks. In that group known as Bachelor Girl School Teachers we see Kathleen Matthews at Balls Creek, Marceline Spencer at Banoak and Genevieve Trott at Claremont. As head of stall' at the Catawba Memorial Hospital is Dr. William Hunt. As head of his nursing staff we see Shirley Abernethy bossing Phyllis Lail and Geraldine Wilkinson. We see in the 'lBig City of Conover none other than Nancy Isenhower as head of the Soap Factory. We look farther into our crystal door and see that Mr. and Mrs. D'avid Corpening are entertaining with a bridge party in honor of the Misses Betty Jo Bolick and Betty Jane Gantt who are leaving soon for New York where they will be Power's Models. Mary Frances Harvell is seen coaching basketball at Mountain View and rooming with her old schoolmate Kate Smith who is teaching there. Now let's look farther into the crystal door: Here we see Isaac Kuhn and Tommy Bass, well-known speakers on the World of Tomorrow. Isaac is taking the optimistic side and Tommy the pessimistic viewpoint. At that well-known Dime Store in Newton-Cline's, we see Dorothy Curlee as manager. The light grows dim and we must step back through the door into the world of today or be forever caught in the world of tomorrow. As a final glance we see Joe Whisenhunt passing from door to door-our home town mail carrier. SHIRLEY ABERNETHY, Prophet. The team won two games. lost five. and tied two. With its captain, Mack Burgess, and co-captain, Ralph Coley, the team showed a fine spirit throughout the year. NEWTON TOPS MARION 13-0 In the opening game of the season, one week after the opening of school, Newton-Conover's foot- ball team showed to the school and the community, its great prospects for the season. Bill Beane, a substitute fullback, sparked thc team to victory with his 25-yard off-tackle run for the first touch- down. In thc second half, Bill Beane ran 75 yards for the second tally of the game. Jack Moseley added the vxtra point and thus the game ended 13 to 0. In this first game, the team showed great ability to stop a strong foe. SHELBY DEFEATS NEWTON Because of rain. the game between Shelby and Newton, to be played in Shelby on Friday night, was played on Monday night. By using to a great advantage their ability to out-kick and out-block the Newton-Conover team, the Shelby Lions quickly took the lead. As a result of block kicks. they scored two touchdowns in the first quarter. In the third quarter the Lions again went on the march and by u series of passes accounted for two more touchdowns. Every man tried his best but the Devils could not get together against the conference champions. The final score was 30 to 0. LINCOLNTON WOLVES DOWN DEVILS 7-25 Early in the first quarter, the Wolves opened a powerful offense, putting the ball on the 15-yard line, then after a few plays, a score! Early in the second quarter the Lincolnton team scored on a pass play. Neither of the tries for extra points was good and so the half ended 12 to 0. In the second half, the Wolves scored twice on blocked kicks. One extra point was good. Late in the game the Devils opened with a passing attack, making the only score on a pass to Coley from Cordell. Jimmie Burgess made the extra point and ended the game 25 to T. NEWTON DEVOURS BELMONT In its second victory of the season the Newton-Conover team staged a great comeback from two dz-feats. They showed powerful line plays, driving down to the twenty-yard line without giving the ball to the other team. One touchdown was made by Jimmie Burgess on a fifty-five yard run and the other was made by Jack Moseley on a recovered fumble. One extra point was completed making the score at the end of the game 13 to 0. DEVILS AND MOORS IN DEADLOCK 0-0 Playing under the coaching of Mr. Gurley, because of a trip to Fort Bragg by the regular coach, the Devils proved their ability to stop a foe favored to win. Throughout the game the ball changed hands many times but always remained near the center of the field. Few attempts were made to score. The last play of the game, a pass to Jack Moseley, was perhaps the most exciting play. He was stopped by one man on a shoestring tackle. Outstanding blocking, tackling, and teamwork made the game a thrilling game from the spectator's viewpoint. Sincc this was the homecoming game it was followed by a dance in the Legion Hut. TORNADOES TAKE DEVILS 6-0 Playing their second game under the coaching of Mr. Gurley, the Devils played perhaps the best game of the season. Throughout the first quarter the foes battled back and forth on practically even terms. but in the second quarter the Tornadoes turned the tide. There, while on the twenty-yard stripe, Bill Jackson took the ball around end for a score. The try for the extra point failed leaving Hickory with a 6 to 0 favor at the half. With Hickory in the lead the Devils resorted to the air, but after many attempts the second half ended with the Hickory team in front by 6 points. Throughout the game both teams expressed their will to win by clean sportsmanship and a Fighting spirit. Page Forty-six riff! CI-IERRYVILLE TIES NEWTON T-T In the only afternoon game of the season, the Newton-Cnnnver Devils tied the Cherryville Ironmen Most of the plays were T to 7. The third quarter ended with the score still 0-0, both sides fighting hard to break the tie. Late in the fourth quarter .lack Moseley intercepted a pass in the Hats and dashed 45 yards for Newton-Conovei-'s tally. The try for the extra point was successful. making the score T to 0 in Newton-Conover's favor. About three or four plays after this. the Cherryville team completed a pass to the three-yard stripe. The lronmen drove across the line into pay dirt for both the touchdown and the extra point. At this time the game ended with both teams claiming 7 points. N. C. S. D. NIPS DEVILS 12-G The North Carolina School for the Deaf. ia the second quarter, nose-d out in front with a 15-yard dash around end. Later in the same quarter. N. C. S. D. intercepted a pass placing the hall in scoring territory. Then on a pass across the center of the line N. C. S. D. received their second tally. Neither try for the extra point was successful and thus the half ended 12 to 0. Throughout the second half the Devils played an offensive game. Late in the last quarter. after a series of line plays and passes had advanced the hall to the 15-yard line. the Devils scored on a pass to Jimmie Burgess from Cordell. The try for the extra point failed, ending the game 12 to 6. DEVILS LOSE TO BEARCATS ln the last game of the season, played in Lenoir. the Lenoir Bearcats took the Newton-Conover team by IR points.
