Senior Class Histor .-lll the :cfm-l1l'.r u sitting- mul ull the own null 'zeamvu merely players. A long, historical play is nearing its finale tonight on this great stage ut the universe. It has lasted for four yearsg and when it is over, we, the players, must go out into other parts of this great stage to take parts in other plays which are just as important as the present one. The play consists of four acts. The first act laegan September. 1931, when, we. as the so-called Green F'reslnnen, seventy in number, niet in thc theatre, Newton High School. Wle felt as if we were in the wrong place, as we roamed through the halls, went in the wrong rooms, and asked silly questions. Ot' course. we did not know our parts at first, hut we soon learned our cues, With the aid and guidance of our teachers. we at last mastered Algebra, Latin, Science, English, and Civics. Like NacBeth, Thane of tllamis, who was striving to become King of Scotland, we wished, to attain higher power. That higher 1.owcr was to heuome Seniors, and have special privileges. As a result of our hard work, we soon found ourselves at the end of the first act. Then the curtain fell, leaving us' happy, because of our success. Act ll, the Sophomore year, was tackled with less resistance, as we had pronted hy the first act. XVc soon discovered that some of our players had dropped out, perhaps to take parts in plays more interest- ing to them. There were, however, new ones to take their places, and with them we labored through English, Algebra, History, Biology, and Latin. NVc began to Feel -a little more important as some of our girls were chosen as waitresses for the ,lnnior-Senior Banquet. Our football team, too, made ns feel important. for under the direction ut' our new coach, Mr. fiurley, it won the NVestern North Carolina Championship. Soon the curtain fell again, to prepare ns for the next act. The curtain rose again for Act lll, directed by Rebekah Brady. ln this act, the first Junior play, Only Me, was given. The proceeds from this play were used to finance the Junior-Senior Banquet to which, for almost three years we had looked forward with great anticipation. The meant that for one night, at least. we would he on the same level with those whom we admire-l, the Seniors. But after this Banquet, we soon came down to earth again and felt more torlorn than ever. Nevertheless, we were more determined to become Seniors, and he on the tirst step in the ladder of success. Again our football team won the VVestern North Carolina Championship. The hrst Newton school newspaper, the Hi-life, was organized, and also the tirst annual, Tntc tflttuitxai... was started. Some of the girls front our Junior Class were members of both staffs. NVe must not forget to mention that some of ns were chosen Marshals for commencement, The curtain tell, and we were almost overcome with joy to lind ourselves at last Seniors! XVe are now staging Act IV, which has lieen under the direction of Eloise Carpenter. XVe, the Class of 1935, fifty in number, have had our chance this year to enjoy our special privileges, and to attend another junior-Senior Banquet. in which we were the principal actors. To ns is due the credit for having the first printed edition of Tnta CAlllDlNAl,. This edition of the annual was made possible by the aid and eo-operation of some of the mercliants and other citizens nf' Newton, Conover, and Hickory. Part of the funds raised front the Senior play, Peggy Parks. :md from selling candy and magic slates. was used for this purpose, also. This year the Girls' Iiasketliall team won the NVestern North Carolina Championship. Ilttt, after all, we cannot say that we are as happy as we thought we would he, for we realize that we have come to the end of the fonrth act. and perhaps for the last time, we have seen some of the actors. The curtain is almost ready to fall. VVe wonder what will he our destiny. Let ns hope that it will not he like thc fate of lilaclictlt, who, having become King of Scotland, .met with a tragic end. We must wait, work, and press Onward Eorrn DEAL, Historian Senior Class Poem THE CLASS OF '35 You have helped us through the foothills: Now the mountains loom ahead. Send us onward with your good-will As we upward now must tread. Up into the peaks of learning. Through the rugged vales of work. Often when for rest we're yearning Ways of conquest ne'cr to shirk. There we'll learn the joy of giving: Some of ns will find the gold, Others Gnd contentment living. To find love or Valor bold. So wc'll go on, work on, hope on. Onward. upward. many ways. The Class of N35 moves on. On to win immortal praise. -LORENA WAGONER. Page Thirteen A RDI AL SD -ligf0 n Ti T 3
