Barat House, formerly the estate of the Schrafft family, and the Putman Art Center, formerly the Harriman residence, were the only existing structures in l946. ln the following year, the north wing of Stuart House was erected and a further addition was completed in l955. Cushing House was constructed in l955 as well, and at that time the entering freshman class numbered one hundred. Duchesne East and West were added to the campus in 1957 and Hardey House, the largest dormitory, was built in l959. The Newton College Chapel, with a seating capacity of nine hundred, was completed in l962, and two years later the Student-Faculty Center was added to Stuart. Keyes South was built in l965 and the Kenny-Cottle Library was completed in l966. In l969, the two most ambitious building projects, Keyes North and the Barry Science Pavilion, brought an era of construction and expansion at Newton to a close. At that time Dr. James J.
