INTELLECTUAL LIFE l Ls . R , Our studies at Newton add the dimension of height. Here, we are high in our aspirations, nolonger contentto have passive, goal-less, high school minds, but striving always for the dis- cipline and direction which a college education can give. Here, our interest in our world is heightened: we find that, through the study of their his- tories and philosophies, many things which never interested us before begin to really matter to us. And here, our standards are high, we realize that we need to know a little about a lot of things, but that we must also know one thing well. How does Newton develop the intellectual dimension in us? She gives us a faculty adept at working with our young and some- what plastic personalities. She gives us modern laboratories and classrooms, a sunny art studio, and piano practice rooms, and a well-equipped library with quiet corners in which to study. Her doors are open to guest lecturers and debaters, and her bulletin boards bristle with notices of student enterprises: panel dis- cussions, debates, club meetings. She obtains for us special art displays and tape recordings, and she sends us out on field trips to learn by doing as well. Finally, Newton helps our intel- lects attain the intellectual heights we strive for by supplying the study atmosphere we need - by putting us in a learning mood.
