O.L.N.C. | presents 1989 The senior class of 1989 is proud to dedicate our yearbook to Mrs. Ruth MacDonald. She has been our friend and teacher since our Sophomore year. She has always been there for us. Because of the unity that Mrs. MacDonald, as our Junior class advisor, instilled in us, our Junior year was probably one of our most memorable. Now that we are seniors and about to Graduate, we would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs. MacDonald for the countless times she had been there for us. Although there were only twelve of them, they were friendly and united. As freshmen they faced many adjustments and challenges. They overcame these in stride and with enthusiasm. We are sure that the freshmen will Succeed in every- thing they do. As a Class and individually, they were energetic and willing to coop- erate. As seniors realizing how fast the next two years as upperclass- men will fly, our advice to the sophomores is to make the most of the next two years. This class has stayed togeth- er through it all. Many obstacles were overcome, and as seniors we know that the only way to over- come these obstacles was to unite and do it together and they did. Our Lady's Newton Catholic The National Honor Society 1988-1989 Advisor Mrs. Ruth MacDonald The National Honor Society is taking pride in their own achievements and helping others. Working alongside the Key Club, these students display leadership by encouragement to others to participate in their many service projects. Each member of this society works hard to live up to the fullest potential of their scholarship abilities and character. 27 Key Club Key Club is a service organization sponsored by The Newton Kiwanis Club. It consists of leaders of the community. Key Club stands for leadership and good citizen practices. This year's Key Club advisor is Ms. Maureen Sullivan. One of our accom- plishments is our food drive for a Project Shelter. We, also, sponsored the Teacher Appreciation Day. Key Club helps us grow into mature and responsible adults. Key Club cares — that is what the world should be about. 28 Yearbook 89 We have labeled this year's yearbook Mission Impossible. At the beginning of the year, we had about twelve people willing to help; by mid November the yearbook staff was down to seven. These seven people were the ones who cared enough about their class and school to go the extra mile. We are all proud of the book we have created. It took a lot of hard work but in the end it all seemed worth it. This yearbook staff was held together by the one, the only Sr. Marianne. She dedicated herself to us and no matter how many headaches she got she still stuck with us! Be proud! They were the best, as we all could see. They won the league title five years ina row. Each game was important the coach let them know. They dove and they leaped so high in the air. When the other team saw this they became filled with fear. With the league's leading captain, with others behind, they'd spike the ball right past opponents. no matter how tall the front line. Now | retire with my pen in hand after telling the tale of the BEST TEAM in the Land. Under the direction of Coach Dabenigno, the girls fin- ished first place in the Catholic Tournament and were the League Champs, making it five years in a row. Linda Leary, Michelle McLaughlin, Jenni McLaughlin, Silvana Visco, and Siobhan Walsh were named to the Catholic League All Star team. Special CongratulationsstosGaptain Linda Leary, who was chosen ‘as the League Most Valuable player for two consecutive years. 35 36 OLNC J.V. Volleyball Team This year's team achieved a great deal. They were the first J.V. team to remain undefeated through a season since the program was first enacted. The team that wouldn't quit The team didn't have as many victories as they intended but they never gave up. The team was led by Captain Silvana Visco. She expressed a lot of leadership and enthusiasm. The girls all together showed a lot of hustle and deserve much praise for all their effort. Varsity Basketball 1988-1989 For the OLNC Varsity Basketball Team, the 1988-1989 season was a time for rebuilding and looking to the future. The team faced a tough league schedule with only two players who had previous varsity experience. Success was not measured in wins, but rather in the game to game environment of the young Lancer Squad. Returning Lettermen and captains Bruno Marini and John O'Leary brought enthusiasm and experience to the team while other team members added hustle and willingness to learn. To seniors Bruno Marino and Jim Deitel: Good Luck! As for junior John O'Leary and Sophomores John Ruffo, Brian Kelly, Glenn Wong, Matthew Podolski, Bill Hutchins, and Aldo Zegarelli, the future looks promising. 40 O.L.N.C. Junior Varsity Basketball The OLNC Junior Varsity Basketball team faced tough competition throughout the 1988-1989 season. Despite the fact the team of ten faced older players (some with var- sity experience), the team managed to play well. As with the Varsity team, the J.V.s relied on the talents of some young, inexperienced players. The team gained confi- dence with each game and survived some ill-timed injuries to become a tough opponent for league schools.
