Going beyond what is expected; to listen, understand, and help, makes each of them special to us. Encouraged by their confidence in us, we dare to take the initiative to grow. As reassuring friends, they stand by us. Together, students, administration, and faculty share the challenge to live more fully. Exerting their best efforts, our teachers constantly strive to enhance our education. They invite us to search for knowledge, inspiring us to explore and answer our questions. They give a little of themselves to each of us, and make our years at N.C. a growing experience. The School Board is comprised of both administration and members of the community. Through initiation and ratification of policy, they provide for the continual improvement and success of the school. As an able administrator, Fr. Fichtner has mastered a tremendous task, one that demands creative resolve in the face of educational expansion. He has given unselfishly of himself to help the school, and we are grateful for what he has done. Sr. Joan, an open and responsive principal, reaches out to guide us. Easily approached, she encourages student input in the school. Her respect for us and our right to education is apparent in her ubiquitous concern for every aspect of our school life. Monsignors McManmon and Granville enable many students to attend N.C. Their desire for the excellence of the school is exhibited through their active membership in the School Board and tuition supplements. Their presence is felt rather than seen, and it is greatly appreciated. The ?TA is a vital organization within our school. Their interest in us is reflected in their contributions to the school. They not only subsidize projects, but make them possible through their own endeavors. Everyone connected with N.C. contributes to its well-being in some way. Each becomes a part of our family. 40 1. We strive to attain success and hope to be able to handle it, to do our best and have that be accepted, to be superior and realize that being yourself is more important. Athletics permit us to reach for these goals on the playing field or basketball court and touch what is essential: having a dream. With their hearts anxiously awaiting a victory, and their heads planning the next move, the frantic crowd vigorously cheers. In a frenzy we long for our team to gain touchdowns, spike for points, bring in runs, and score baskets. We love our team! Between the players and their spectators, there exists a magnetic bond, When tension strikes or triumph prevails, our support has an inspiring effect on the team. Our enthusiasm is so vibrant that it cannot be exaggerated. We are a part of our team! 52 a ay M. Hoban, G. Fiermonte, C. Ahearn, J. Palkey, P. Battista, T. Proia, M. McManus, M. O’Neal, J. From bus to field to court, they activate the emotions of the onlooking crowds. Through practice and planning, the squad developed a sense of accomplishment and justifiable pride. With smiling faces and strident voices, the girls execute a sweep of movements from Russian jumps to towering mounds. The optimism and drive of coaches, Debbie Giusti and Judy Tambascio, enkindled a spirit of confidence and determination which made their cheering experience enjoyable. 5S a te FIRST ROW: K. Kiley 54 Generating tremendous enthusiasm on the Lancer side of the line, the N.C. football team completed a winning season with a 6-4-1 record. Although the year began with a disheartening loss to St. Clement, the Lancers staged a spectacular comeback against Sacred Heart. Lucien Marini strategically opened holes in their defense to allow Steve Venditti, Steve Huber, and Tony Rosetti to score three unanswered touchdowns. Emerging from a defeat at the hands of St. Pat, the Lancers tied Arlington Catholic 6-6. All Catholic Captain Jim Schmidlein, a four-year starter, displayed great prowess as he led the defensive line with his aggressive tackling ability. Star receiver Bob Finelli intercepted an A.C. pass and ran the ball 65 yards for the only N.C. touchdown. In the outing against St. Col, All Catholic John Venditti’s strong blocking enabled the ‘‘runners supreme”, Franco and Rosetti, to power the team to a 12-6 victory. Co-captain Billy MacDonald held the defense together, stifling the Chieftans’ every effort to penetrate our line. Even two defeats could not thwart the Lancer spirit. With only seconds remaining in the Notre Dame game, a Huber bullet corralled by Phil Capello in the end zone secured the Lancer triumph, 14-6. Co-captain Quarterback Tim Hoban, sparked the Lancer offense throughout the year with his expert ball-handling ability. In the Tyngsboro game, his two touchdowns led the Lancers to a 21-14 victory. After a Cathedral forfeit, the Lancers met Notre Dame for their last game on a chilly Thanksgiving Eve. Steve Walsh’s reception of a onside kick in the last minutes preserved the exciting win, 17-12. Lenny Connaughton, the assistant J.V. coach, Mark O’Brien, our ‘‘P.R. man’’, and Ed Desmond, the team manager, each ably contributed to the first-rate quality of the football season. With exhilaration and steadfast optimism, Head Coach Tom Raeke and Defensive Coach Nino Antonellis led the team through both defeat and victory. BL, JJO4SEN 57 FIRST ROW: J. King, E. Desmond, S. With each player excelling in her specialty, the team bumped, set, and spiked its way to a second place divisional finish. All-Catholic Laurie Abruzzi, Lee-Anne Downey, and Fabienne Anselme were outstanding servers as they put the ball into motion. Co-captain Teresa Canty and All-Catholic Maureen Conboy set up our plays, and with precise bumps they directed the ball toward the front row. Here, All-Catholic, Co-captain Jennifer Hays, having carefully positioned herself, sends the ball spiraling with accuracy so that Donna Murphy and Regina Canty can forcefully spike it over the net. Practicing many hours, the determined team doggedly perfected their plays. Their efforts were rewarded by a place in the Catholic Tourney. In their best season to date, the Volleyball team posted a record of 12-2; truly a championship team! Under the leadership of Captain Colleen Conboy, the J.V. team had a winning season. Their enthusiasm and support was greatly appreciated by the Varsity team. The success of the Volleyball teams was due, in large part, to the tireles s efforts of coaches Robin Ojala and Cindy Timmons. With constant attention and endless patience, they rearranged positions, experimented with the defense, and tested plays until they achieved the winning combination. FIRST ROW: M. Conboy, Canty, C. Through victory and defeat, their determination remained steadfast. Capt. Mark Waters’ accurate passes blended with the quick offensive moves of Billy Kearney to instigate driving lay-ups. Capt. Steve Venditti’s aggressive defense and Capt. Tim Hoban’s precise shooting ability provided the backbone of the team. The words of Coach Frank Ferreer, ‘‘Play your hardest and give your best effort. Winning is a fringe benefit’, were manifest in the vigorous game of the squad. They may have had a losing season, but their pride went undefeated. 63 One of the most outstanding N.C. teams was the '78-’79 Varsity Squad. They climaxed a successful season by posting a 10-4 record. Scoring wizards, Claire (101 point season total), C armel (100 point season total), and Kathy (22 point game high) sparked the victories that led to a rewarding season. Jen and Nat, cagey competitors, swept the boards of rebounds and provided prodigious point power for the team. Teresa and Jeanne, shooting accurately from outside the key, and Laurie and Joan, scoring points from beneath the basket formed an outstanding basketball unit. Coach Robin Ojala was a driving force in the girls’ quest for victory. Together they formed a team that was a threat to every contender. 64 Back Row: C. Fandel, C. McNulty, L. Abruzzi, C. The J.V. squads excelled in dribbling and shooting. surpassing all other teams to establish themselves at the top in their leagues. The girls’ team with an 11-1 record tied for first place. Coach Cindy Timmons blended the varied talents of the girls to form an outstanding team. The boys, led by Coach Dabeningo accrued a 12-5 record. Experienced sophomores working along with talented freshmen earned a first place standing. Relying on the ability of the J.V. we eagerly anticipate another successful season next year. Bottom: C.
