College of William and Mary Head of English Department A well-rounded education necessitates the ability to express one’s self through writing as well as speaking. The English department strives to accomplish this in its approach to the student. While study- ing literature, the student learns the vari- ed styles of writing as well as interpreta- tion. Through oral discussions, he learns self-expression. Grammar, sentence struc- ture, and composition are basics that are taught to better able the student to ex- press himself through writing. To help students understand today’s problems and themselves through his- torical experiences and advances of great men and nations is the aim of the History Department. Eighth grade students are required to take history. Either world history or geography must be taken as a graduation requirement. Juniors are required to pass United States History, while seniors struggle with U.S. government.
