You Are An Important Part The staff of the ANCHOR has the privilege of dedicating the 1965 yearbook to a person who con- tinually performs a commendable job on the New- port News High School staff. In the 6 years he has been a member of our school’s staff, he has not only worked unselfishly at his required tasks, but has spent many long, extra hours in our school, insuring the students, faculty, and administration of a bene- ficial place to learn and work. The scope of this man’s job has increased each year. Yet, his manner has remained friendly and helpful. Students and teachers unhesitatingly bring their problems to him, knowing that they will re- ceive his attention and aid. From your sense of devotion we see how proud and fond you are of Newport News High School and the people within its walls. Now we have a chance to show you how appreciative we are of you. With many thanks for your interest in us, the ANCHOR staff dedicates our yearbook to you, our custodian, Mr. James F. Carter, Jr. Entering the doors of NNHS, Mr. Carter is ready to begin a day’s work. Mr. Carter answers to the needs of troublesome window Kidding in the office, Mr. Carter shares a joke with Mrs. shades. Price as he works on a needed oil job.

(Photo by Ed Streeky) A close investigation of a RIVER will reveal some of the ever varying beauty which can be perceived by the observant. And a river, like all of nature, can convey to us many truths about our lives. The colors of a river may vary from brownish green to a clear, vibrant blue. These changes contribute to the beauty of the river. Yet, in reality, these are surface factors. The real beauty of any river stems from its life-giving powers. A river provides moisture for growth, life for the animals and vegetation which prosper in its immediate environ- ment and in that of its tributaries. Newport News High School is symbolic of a river. Some may call the facade of our build- ing stately, while others may dislike its structure. But, it is the existence of life within these walls which gives importance to our school. Newport News High School provides us with the opportunity of acquiring knowledge, while we, its tributaries, may become par- ticipators — the life which feeds the stream. Our school is a river of learning for its stu- dents — a continuing flow of knowledge and friendships from which we, the students, benefit throughout our lives. 3
