Speak to the Student Body The years you spend here, though few, can be one of the most fruitful periods of your lives if you will live those years productively. You are part of a generation that is meeting, and must continue to encounter, challenges never imagined by stu- dents of by-gone years. Opportunities open to you — indeed there will be numerous ones, but these same openings will bring multiple responsibilities that you must be able to meet successfully. Your strongest efforts — your realization of your maximum potential — will be the substratum to bridge the chasm between your days at Newport News High School and a happy life for you after high school. All life for you — in an institution of higher learning, or in a position in the world of business or homemaking — will require your full attention and your keenest efforts. If you wish to accept and fulfill your innumerable duties in this demanding age — your era — you must be assidu- ous, stalwart, and qualified. Utilizing your strengths in the areas of scho- larship, citizenship, extra-curricular duties, and wholesome human exchange of daily living, you can enjoy now, whether you are a Grade 8 pupil or a Senior, the immeasurable privileges Newport News High School offers you to develop your true potential, and thereby establish a basis for your continuous growth, as you discover and establish your rightful place in this busy world. Your aims must be high ; your efforts even higher ; your ac- complishments successful, and most of all satis- fying. Who are you ? The answer is not John Doe or Mary Roe; these are only names. Who you are is what you are, and what you are is a bright and shining gem of many facets. No two such gems are exactly alike. Each of you has his own inheritance factors reflected in your mental, physical, and emotional traits. Each has his acquired characteristics stemming from the environment in which you have been nur- tured. Each of you has and is a personality — unique in all the world ! So be yourself, not a poor imitation of someone else ! Be the boy or girl you really are ; be noble, free, unafraid. Nurture your personality upon lofty mo- tive and high endeavor. Let your self-expression flow through channels of usefulness. Others see and note who you are by what you are. Emerson said, “What you are . . . thunders so that I cannot hear what you say to the contrary.” In all times and in all places, remember who you are ! r MISS MARGARET LANE MR. THOMAS O. KEESEE 23

These Staffs Help in Making Mr. Wheary and Mrs. Cash “Hey, Louie, Look busy — here comes that photographer again!” The daily records, tardy slips, excuses, and at- tendance reports all come under the watchful eye of Mr. Wheary. Sharing Mr. Wheary’s office and re- sponsibilities is Mrs. Cash. All students, especially seniors, come in contact with Mrs. Cash. Her duties as registrar include sending off transcripts for col- lege bound students. Without the help of the office staff, N. N. H. S. would be mass confusion! The staff not only types, mimeographs, and keeps books balanced, but also aids all students in any way possible. % L. to R. Mrs. Price, Mrs. Bell, Mrs. O’Neal “Look happy girls — here comes J.W.! 1
