Selections are Made of Band M iss Brenda Clarke Excitement mounted as Miss Kay Andleton was escorted onto the field by junior band drum major, Tony Koskinas. With a combination of smile and tears, the Band Sweetheart accepted her bouquet of red roses. During the half-time show of the Newport News-Norview football game, the junior and senior bands presented the 1964 Band Sweet- heart. This year Miss Brenda Clarke became the 16th annual Sweetheart with Miss Kay Andle- ton as her attendant. Senior band members voted on the queen by secret ballot. As a climax to the ceremony, Miss Brenda Clarke danced to the traditional “Let Me Call You Sweetheart” waltz with drum major Randy Smith. Mr. C. N. Zoumplis, Band Parents Association president, presented the attendant with a bouquet of yellow roses. 12

Sweetheart and Friendly Typhoons Eighth and ninth grade Friendly Typhoons, Larry Ealey, Debbie Pierce, and Tony Koskinas appear to be studying hard. Could the book be titled “How To Win Friends and Influence People.” Newport News High School turned the spotlight on friendliness as November 16-20 was set aside as Friendly Typhoon Week. During this week, each homeroom nominated and voted for the boy and girl whom they thought were the friendliest in their grade. Voting was also held for the friendliest teachers. Posters and colorful signs reminded the students that this was their week to smile! Interrupted during a five-sided conversation are the sopho- more and junior Friendly Typhoons, Linda Condron, Johnny Mercer, Ferdy Wagner, and Patty Dempsey. “Donna, do you see any teachers coming down the hall?” whispers Joe Mooney to Donna Windsor. Joe and Donna are the Friendliest Seniors. Checking the office bulletin board are the friendly teachers, Mrs. Tucker and Coach Woolum. 13
