Open Sky And List Teachings William Cullen Bryant In the classroom a different circumstance exists. It is not a fight for survival, but rather a striving of each student to fulfill his potential. To fulfill this potential the student sets his goal and seeks to reach it. While the animal has only his natural instincts to guide him, the student possesses the power of reason, this being the prime difference between animal and man. “Go forth under the open sky, and list to Nature’s teachings.” By man’s observance of nature, he sees the depth and vastness of the plan which governs the universe. Go Forth Under The To Nature’s Within a forest there are evident forces of Nature which act upon the inhabitants and make it necessary that, for survival, they employ their own capabilities. Throughout his high school life, the student is faced with obstacles and challenges. By facing them he matures and develops, enabling him to meet the respon- sibilities he will encounter in later life. “Survival of the fittest” is the law which governs life in the forest. The weaker animal must constantly defend himself against the stronger, with only his instinct as his guide. Table of
