THEY, COMBINED WITH THE These Typhoon lollipops, por- trayed by our Varsity Flag- twirlers, left to right, Irene James, Carol Petenbrink, Barbara Ellis, Faith DeAr- ment, Paulette Odom, Nancy Staton, Wanda Thornhill, and Juanita Hayes, show the team by their song, that they really want N. N. H. S. to “Lick the Admirals.” These mice, Nancy Lewis, Gloria Bellows, and Frances Hollifield, show that they, too, feel that honor is a big part of their lives here at N. N. H. S. You had better watch the time, Mary Anas and Don- ald Schwartz. Spend- ing too much time in the halls almost made you late for class. “Dear Alma Mater, through the years, We’ll ne’er forget our love for you,” sings Catherine Barter, ac- companied by Julie Jaffee, as they present their original class song to the graduating seniors. 14

WITH YOUTHFUL ENTHUSIASM. Promoting school spirit by cheering at football and basketball games, and leading the student body in pep assemblies are the main jobs of the Varsity Cheerlead- ers. Surrounding head cheerleader Judi Haw- ley, the girls at the top left running clockwise are Sally Morewitz and Stephanie Spradlin, Jane Walker and Josie Morgan, Brenda Veasey and Tina Burroughs, and Becky Smith and Rochelle Leifer. During the winter Athletic Awards Assembly, Mr. Julian Gordon presents Downie Wray with the Julian Gordon Trophy, as Jim Workman, winner of the Hi-Y Good Sportsmanship Trophy, observes. “Mr. Chairman, Homeroom 206 casts all of its 30 votes for the mice,” says this homeroom rep- resentative in the annual Mouse Assembly. 13

EVENTS AND TRADITIONS “Sh-h-h-h, he’s shooting a foul shot!” New- port News fans exhibit their well known sportsmanship at the Hampton basketball game. “Best of luck to the Class of 1962,” says Senior Class president, Hor- ace Underwood, as he transfers the traditional cap and gown to Bill Bryant, President of the Junior Class. After their arrival at school and before homeroom period begins, Cho Gillespie, Alvin Downs, and Banning Crossley spend their time waiting for the girls. Meanwhile Annette Rouse, Sharron Weaver, and Judy Sawyer spend their time primping. It seems as though these students are thor- oughly enjoying their snack at the Y. M. C. A., since a favorite teenage diet consists of cokes and potato chips. 15
