TERI THE D I MR. S. D. GREEN Being assistant Superintendent of Schools involves many responsibilities, such as serving as a member of the School Board. Mr. Green is also in charge of carrying out the routine duties of the school system. DR. R. O. NELSON One of the most outstanding men of our community is the Superintendent of Schools, Dr. R. O. Nelson. He is concerned with the various problems that arise, from the planning of the yearly budget to recom- mending the names of new teachers to be presented to the School Board. Because of his congenial per- sonality and authoritative attitude he has established a fine reputation at Newport News High School. ISTR T IO 'Ui limi MISS ETHEL GILDERSLEEVE Dean of girls, Miss Ethel C-ildersleeve, has been the inspiration of many students throughout their high school years. She guides the students with their projects and helps with the administrative work. She serves as advisor to the Student Council and the Future Teachers of America. Miss Cildersleeve has an admirable personality and is well liked by everyone. MISS ELMA FREE lt is with deep regret that we witness the retirement of a teacher who has spent many hours on the behalf of her students. Miss Free, Latin teacher and sponsor of the Latin Club, has been a constant guide to her pupils and has shown her outstanding teaching ability through- out her many years of service. Our sincere appreciation is extended to Miss Free, who we will always remember with respect and admiration.
