To the students of Newport News High School it is symbolic of the fellowship experienced in the classroom, the participation shown in activities, and the fun shared in our school life. Serving as your sponsor has been an honor and a privilege and l will indeed miss you. Very sincerely, Moneda Key Congratulations to you, the members of the i958 graduating class. lt has been an honor and a pleasure to work with you as your sponsor during the past year. l believe all of you realize that life is like a moun- tain, and your goal must be to reach the top. Don't think that your graduation from high school has put you at the pinnacle, for this is only another step in your climb. Look upward, and you will see that the greater the ascent, the wider your vision. Your climb must continue in order for you to at- tain these broader visions, however, it will be more difficult as you progress because many of your guides cannot go further with you. Now that you have finished high school and must go forward in life, don't limit your accomplishments to others' outward actions, but grow great through dreams, Some of us often let these noble dreams die, but others will nourish and protect them through bad days until they eventually come true. l am sure that you will take the latter course and achieve a happy, prosperous life. Cood luck to each of you. Sincerely, Charles W. Nuttycombe 18 D OUT T ANDING LE DER il? Our capable officers have led us through an exciting last year at N.N.H.S. Starting off the season against a tough Manchester team, the Typhoon decisioned the Lancers, I3-7 and then traveled to Group ll York where they amassed a total of 26 points while holding the Falcons to a zero total. Back home in Saunders Stadium, the Blue and Cold met a terrific E. C. Class team which proved to be a big setback in more ways than one. Besides losing, l4-0, NN lost the services of fullback Don Hardy who broke his leg and was out for the rest of the season. On the road again, Newport News met Maury at Fore- man Field and suffered a second straight defeat, I9-l2, but the following Friday, the Typhoon rebounded to take a weak Suffolk team, 27-O. On Oct. 25, the home-standing Typhoon met Warwick and downed the Free Staters I2-O. Led by backs, Keller and Spivey, and playing such smooth possession ball, NN beat the Farmers for the first time since l952. This big victory was followed up by a close, 26-21 loss to the future District champs, Norview, which was in turn fol- lowed by a 24-l3 win over Cranby's Comets. On the following Friday, NN smeared a toothless Tiger team from C-roveton, 33-12. Van Noy, Keller, and Mollick demonstrate o play to the rest of the team at one of the last practices before the Hampton game. H a m pt o n Co-Captains Bridges and Porter and N.N. Co-Captains Out- land and Tesh await the outcome of the opening toss of the coin. After winning these last two games, the Cold and Blue gridders went on to play their worst game of the season, losing to the powerful Hampton Crabbers, 20-O, in the 60th Annual Turkey Day game. Very little can be said for this Comedy of Errors, except that the Typhoon was definitely not playing the way it had before. Despite the last game and the season's injuries, the season was a fine one, and one of which the team, the coaches and the school can be proud. The team was blessed with many stars, including Keller, Tesh, Mar- shall, Mollick, and Spivey in the backfield, Outland, Jones, Markos, Farnsworth, Van Noy, and Friedland on the line, and Ellis and Morgan on ends. Co-Captains Dan Outland and Jack Tesh, and Quarterback Bucky Keller were honored, Keller received the Julian Cordon Trophy and Tesh received the first annual Sportsman- ship Trophy from the Hi-Y. With half the team graduating, Coach Range will have a rebuilding year next year, but he has good material to build around. Returnees Spivey, Friedland, Rouse, Canepa, and Ivey will be players to watch next season. As we close this season, the ANCHOR and the student body wish Coach Range good luck and hope that he does as well in '58 as he did in '57. 4 Ag,- K Uv 9'5 A 10 L ,m. TYPHOON TRI UMPHS The Golden Typhoon of Newport News, finest team in Virginia Sroup One Basketball, roared its way through 25 straight games this season and added the crowning touch by being Eastern District Cham- aians, District Tournament Champions, and State Champions for the third year in a row. With four returning seniors, Bucky Keller, Kenny Roberts, Don Ellis, :nd Jack Tesh, and junior Harry Conn, Coach Driesell had an un- stoppable quintet that compiled a I9-0 regular season record, for Newport News' first undefeated season since l929. In addition, the team smashed the old state record of 3l straight games, set by E. C. Glass, and set a new record of 46 straight victories. Starting off the season against Maury, the Typhoon rolled over all opposition, including arch-rivals Hampton, Warwick, Wilson, and Sranby. Up until tournament time the biggest scare thrown at the Typhoon had been at the hands of a fired-up Warwick team, which lost 50-48. In the District Tournament NN had no trouble disposing of Hampton and Norview, but Granby began to figure as o real threat. The State Tournament at Charlottesville was also a breeze at first, with the Typhoon polishing off Falls Church and E. C. Glass, but Sranby once again entered the picture in the final game, one of the 'nost thrilling in years. Jack Tesh's two foul shots clicked at the last 'ninute to put the Typhoon on top, 50,48, for the Championship. All-time great Bucky Keller headed the talented regulars and es- tablished an unprecedented personal total of i880 points during his Four years on the varsity squad. Although second highest scorer in the state, his real greatness showed in the large number of assists 'ie contributed. The amazing ball-handling ability of Kenny Roberts and the terrific rebounding of Donald Ellis were major factors in the team's success. Jack Tesh's defensive abilities and great clutch playing came through when the team needed it most, as did Harry Conn's sparkling floor- manship and dead-eye set shot. A big asset to the team was the tremendous bench strength in such reserves as seniors Bradley and Foster, and underclassmen Gill, Wil- Iiams, Ivey, Midkiff, Veazey, and Rouse. The team received many awards, both team and individual. Captain Bucky Keller made the first team of both tournaments, was named the outstanding player in the Eastern District Toumament, and re- ceived the Penn Williams Memorial Trophy for the second straight year. He was chosen for the most outstanding player in Virginia, and made the All-Peninsula, All-Eastern, All-State, and State All-Star team. Kenny Roberts was also on the State All-Star team as well as the All-Peninsula team, the District Tournament team, the AlI-Dis- trict team and the second State team, and was awarded the first Hi-Y Basketball Sportsmanship Trophy. Don Ellis was our third mem- ber of the State All-Star team and was on the All-Peninsula team, the All-District team and the second All-State team. Since he is losing four regulars and two reserves, Coach Driesell will have a rebuilding year next year, but he has promising material in this season's reserves and the Champion J.V. team. , As the season closes, the ANCHOR congratulates the team and Coach Driesell on the phenomenal season and expresses a hope for four straight next year. Virgil Meares, the team captain, and David Peltz placed first and second respectively in each dual meet, Meares broke the record in the Eastern District Meet, and with solid backing from boys like Puckett, Crickenberger, and Hor- ton, the team went on to take second place in the State Meet, again with Meares and Peltz first and second. At the outset of the season, the Typhoon nine was hampered by adverse weather conditions and had less practice sessions than were planned as a result. However when NN met its first few opponents, this lack of practice was barely noticeable. With a few key Iettermen returning from last year's champions, it looked as though Newport News High School would once again be a leading contender for the district title. As the ANCHOR went to press, the Typhoon diamondmen had chalked up wins over most of their non-conference opposition, an early loss to Wilson being the only blot on the record at that time. Jack Tesh, Dan Rouse, and Guy Vanness were the pitchers that figured in the hurling plans of Coach Jack Powers. The batting strength of Coach Pow- ers' outfit lay in the abilities of Jimmy Van Noy, Jesse Kersey, Donald Ellis, and Captain Donald Mollick, while Horace Underwood, Mike McCormick, Allen Faster, and Donnie White were expected to contribute defensive strength. In the first game of the season, Newport News met and downed a Poquoson nine, 7-4. The game was highlighted by the pitching of NN's Guy Vanness who gave up only four hits to the Bull-Islanders. A well-pitched Wilson High team shaded the battling Typhoon in Newport News' second non-conference encounter. NN also received a good hurling iob from southpaw Dan Rouse, but the Presidents had a slight advantage in the hit department and went on to take the game, 2-I. The pitching of the Typhoon continued to excel as visiting York was held to one weak hit by Jack Tesh in his first pitching assignment. Warwick's Farmers were the next opponents on the Typhoon schedule. A strong NN batting game and Warwick's fielding miscues contributed to a 5-2 Newport News win. The prospects for the rest of the season looked good indeed at printing time, and by the time this appears we hope that Newport News will be on top again. In any case the team will be sure to make the student body proud of them as they have done in the past. 137 DIAMOND SCOREBOARD- i958 NNHS 7 Poquoson' 4 I Wilson' 2 6 York' O 5 Warwick' 2 I Hampton 2 4 Wilson 3 8 Warwick 7 0 Princess Anne I 4 Churchland O May 3 Oscar Smith Home May 6 Maury Away May 9 Suffolk Away May IO York' Away May I3 Norview Away May I6 Cradock Home May 20 Granby Home May 24 Hampton' Home 'Non-conference HO R OF PR CTICE AND TRAINING ,,,,-Q-ad-0' ,,....w-A wi X f A. . ,E , DONALD MOLLICK JACK TESH JIMMY VAN NOY DAN ROUSE Center Field Pitcher First Bose Pitcher Captain 9 2 A sw i FY Jesse Kersey is Shown fensely watching the pitcher while waiting Horace Underwood is safe at first as York's first bosemon owoits the boll. for the pitch.
