His sincere devotion to his work has won for him the respect and admiration of the faculty and student body. Because of his good nature and deep understanding, he is thought of by most students, not as a teacher, but as a revered friend and adviser. As a small token of our apprecia- tion for his never-ending labors, we, the class of June, l955, dedicate our yearbook to Mr. John A. Huller. 5 VIRGINIA TEACHEPJS REGISTER Ih Ctyf FACULTY ASEIESSTT 6 4 n 'E l l i 1 OUR RCHIT ECT Our assistant principal, Mr, Keesee, is more than a dis- ciplinary officer. Mr. Mclntosh, our principal, has many responsibilities which he carries out quietly and efficiently, The good name of our school was acquired largely through his efforts, and it will continue to grow under his leader- ship, His excellent guidance has won the admiration and respect of all people throughout the State. Miss Gildersleeve, our dean of girls, is not only an adviser to us, but a good friend too. She leads us in student gov- ernment and efficiently solves the many problems that arise at Newport News High School. 8 PLANNED THE ORK Dr. Nelson has the job of coordinating the entire New- port News school system. LUCILLE WILLIAMS BILL MARTIN Graduate of Riverside Custodian O R RETIRI G TE CHER Retiring this year from their teaching duties :ire three of our most esteemed instructors. They have given freely of their time and talents for many long years, and we are privileged to have this opportunity to thank them. Mrs. Hurt, teacher of history, is the senior re- tiring teacher in years of service. She has made her subject a vital and living thing and has aroused in her pupils an interest which will long remain. Miss Burbank, teacher of senior English, has proved an inspiration to all with whom she has come in contact during her 35 years here at New- port News High School. She has unceasingly tried to instill within her students an appreciation of great literature and to aid them in their own literary efforts. Miss Brasher, teacher of typing, has been in the school system since l924. She has been an efficient and exact instructor of this practical art, and has ably prepared her students for the com- mercial world. And so we, the students of Newport News High School thank these three teachers who have served us so faithfully. We extend to them our very sin- cerest wishes for a most happy time in the follow- ing years, and we hope that they will remember us with the same fondness with which we shall re- member them. The team operating for the second year under the direction of co-coaches, J. C, Ranger and Jack Powers, had an up-and- down season. Against the green, but hustling football team from Roa- noke, the golden Typhoon went down to their second defeat, 33-O. After suffering two straight losses, the Typhoon roared back to beat a tough Lynchburg squad, 6-2, and followed this with a scoreless tie with the highly favored Maury High School. The Typhoon ten took to the road, playing Woodrow Wilson of Portsmouth, who were destined to be State Champions, losing a heart-breaking game 13-7, This was one of the best games the Typhoon played all year. They played Wilson to a stand-still and accept for a lucky break, the Typhoon would have won the ball game. The following week, he Typhoons played one of their arch rivals, Warwick High School and suffered a 20-O set- back. The Typhoon then roaded back in the next two games whipping Cranbv 25-6 and Cradock 7-6. On Thanksgiving Day in the traditional Turkey Bowl ganne an underdog Hampton team played superb football handing the Typhoon a 20-O shellacking, With a few breaks, the Typhoon would have had a great season, but was handicapped due to injuries to key players, in crucial games. Jimmy McShane received the Julian Cordon Trophy, for being the team's outstanding player and Howard Todd, Jimmy Smith and Ben Keeter were elected 'Tri-Captains to suc- ceed Richard Holt, Jimmy McShane, and Wayne Sharpe. The team was composed of mostly seniors, with 30 out of 37 players playing their last football season for the Typhoon. Jimmy McShane, Richard Holt, Howard Todd, and Gene Hedrick received mention on several of the post season All-Star teams. 92 4 l i I i i i l VARSITY Benedictine, A . Roanoke. Lynchburg . Maury . OUR GREE SKETB LL TE HORACE WILLIAMS-Forward BASKETBALL HI-LIGHTS For the first time in 27 years the Newport News High School basketball team started its season without a returning player. Coach Bill Chambers, our new coach, took these inexperienced boys and molded them into a smooth polished high school quintet. The Typhoon started off the season by winning the first three games which experts predicted was all they would win that season, but the team under Coach Chambers' wise tutelage inspired his boys to a highly successful season, winning lo games and losing four during the regular season. Coach Chambers' Whiz Kids also represented the high school for the eighth s'roight year in the Group I Basketball Tournament, being eliminated in the semi-final game of the tourna- ment by the star-studded experienced Jefferson Senior of Roanoke. Coach Chambers and his Whiz Kids were probably the most polished team in the State at the end of the season and with most of the boys returning next year, he will probably lead them to greater heights. Horace Williams, the captain of the team, who had never played a single Varsity game in his career, under Coach Chambers' teaching was the leading scorer in the Eastern District, with a l9 point average, fifth in the State in scoring and made the All-State team. Freddie McDowell and Bucky Keller also made the All- Tournament second team. Other outstanding players on the team were Slade Dunn, who did most of the rebounding and Gene Hedrick, probably one of the scrappiest players in Group One Basketball. When the Whiz Kids ended the season, many honors were bestowed upon them, Horace Williams received the Agathon Trophy as the outstanding bas- ketball player on the team. In addition, Horace also set a new individual scoring record of 44 points in one game. Gene Hed- rick received the Penn Williams Trophy as the best defensive player. From these six letter men and eager youngsters, Coaches Julie Conn and Lou Plummer proved once again that they are probably the most successful track coaches in the Old Dominion. The experts predicted that this would be the year that Newport News would have their first un- successful track season, but the master coaches built one of the most formidable track teams of recent years. In their first dual meet with Granby, the Typhoon Thinclaid was supposed to go down to a crushing defeat, but the Typhon Track Squad through the efforts of Jimmy Star- board, Phil Clark, and Jimmy McShane beat Granby by a score of 76V2 to 37V2 and the following week crushed their arch-rivals by a score of 722 t3 to 34 ZX3. The Typhoon Track Team led by boys like Jimmy Starboard, Phil Clark, Jimmy McShane, Horace Williams, Joe Hin- nant, Gene Stanfield, Jimmy Carter, Eddie Taylor and a flock of others were expected to be heavy contenders once again for the State Championship. The Golden Typhoon was expected to finish the season undefeated in dual meets and some experts thought that they would sweep the Eastern District, Tidewater, and the State Cham- pionship. Newport News High School Track Teams in the last twenty-eight years have won the State Championship fifteen times, the Tidewater and Eastern District Championship eighteen times and have been defeated only once at twenty-eiaht vears of dual meets. The Cross Country Team with green inexperienced boys had a fair sea- son. They were beaten twice by Hampton in dual meets, finished second in a triangular meet with Hampton, and Wilson, and won a dual meet from Granby. The cross country runners finished fifth in a state meet. CROSS COUNTRY - First Row: Left to right, R. Gray, M. Thweatt, J. Fryer, B. Ed- wards, R. Stoops. Second Row: Coach Conn, B. Dobson, H. Congratulations upon having reached a sig- nificant goal in your lives. Being your sponsor has been a privilege and an honor. As you leave your high school life, remember one cannot measure the values of life with a yard-stick or an adding machine. Place the em- phasis in the right place, and live in the knowl- edge that there is no investment so valuable as the investment of personal character.
