C. Cowboy Range and Jack Powers, provided us with what many say was the ma determined, spirited, and fighting team ever to play in Saunders' Stadium. l Led by Co-Captains Mac Langston and Bill Floyd, the small and inexperienced Typhoons dropped the first two encounters of the season against the heavier and experienced Greenbriar Military Academy, ar Jefferson Senior of Roanoke. Profiting by the defeats, the Gold and Blue bounced by to trip highly favors E. C. Glass of Lynchburg-H3-OJ. The following week the Typhoon, while holding the Commodores on even terms for over half the game, developed fumbleitis , and were dealt their third loss ofthe season. Again it was Quarterback Mac Langston, with the help of a vastly improved forward wall, who mixed up passes and ran such tricky plays, that the Presidents of Woodrow Wilson were never able to stop. After this convincing upset, former Typhoon coach, Pete Sachon, proclaimed Langston as the finest quarterback in the State. Warwick with probably the biggest team in Group l, took the Gold and Blue the following week in a convincing fashion, f2O-75. Again it was fight and determination that accounted for the Typhoon's throttling of Norview 128 to 63. After the Norview victory, the Typhoon bowed out in two thrillers. Loosing at halftime l3-O, the Blue Comets of Granby with more re- serves bounced back quickly to thrash the Typhoon l9-13. Crad- dock, like Granby scored with less than two minutes to decision the Typhoon. Led by Marvin Mitchell, Wayne Sharpe, Jimmy Axley, and Bill Floyd, the Typhoon battled the high-riding Crabbers in a Spine tingling brawl, only to bow out in the last quarter 2l-7. Marvin Mitchell and Jimmy McShane received the Peninsula Sports Club awards, Mac Langston received the Julian Gordon Trophy to round out a successful season. 46 SEASON RECORD WE THEY Greenbriar 7 Military Academy 27 Jefferson l 9 Senior-Roanoke 26 l3 E. The coaches were taced with a task ot molding inexperienced but willing boys into another ick team. The loss ot such boys as Bobby Sterling, Taylor Cioode, Elwood Warren, Tommy Weymouth, nald Jenkins, and Ray Sawyer was hard to replace, but through the wise knowledge and ability ot the aches, they came up with boys like Clarence Roberts, Jimmy Starboard, Marvin Mitcvhell, Jim Mc- ane, Alvin Mizelle, Jim Axley, Joe Parker, Phil Clark, and Buddy Stein to mention a tew. The track Jm defeated Ciranby in their opening meet by a margin ot one point which was decided by the crack ay team. The Typhoon' then went on to win other dual meets with Hampton, Maury, and Warwick. ey took fourth place in the Tidewater meet and improved their position by taking second place in the stern District Meet. The track team also entered the Virginian-Pilot Relays. During the course ot these aets, Captain Clarence Roberts broke all exisiting Virginia high school records tor the pole vault as made a jump ot 12 tt. lOVg in. in the Tidewater Meet. Jimmy Starboard also set a new NNHS record the low hurdles with a time ot 20.2. Through the etforts ot Clarence Roberts and Jimmy Starboard cl their tellow team mates, the NNHS track team proved themselves champions by going undefeated lall dual meets tor the l9th time in 20 years. Only once in 20 years has a NNHS track team been leated in a dual meet. The C-old and Blue thin clads were preparing for the state meet as we wrote their 5 story and all the track experts were predicting that the Typhoon tracksters would be in top conten- n for the state title even though every other competing team had more experienced boys than the Ty- oons. The track experts knew that through the wise coaching of Plummer and Conn, the hard working ys and never say die spirit of the NNHS track team, the Typhoon would have to be the team to de- Jt for the state championship. 53 A FI E E N ALTHOUGH THEY W . ls., ,gb X . At NNHS, a student's ability to meet these require- ments may be based upon his work on either the Anchor, the Beacon, or Launchings. Students may apply for membership at three times during the school year in a letter of application, in which they state their eligibilities. The NNHS chapter of Quill and Scroll is one of the oldest of all high school chapters as it was organized only three years after the national society was begun. New members not shown: Barbara Drucker, Jeryl Diamant, Ann Adams, Vianne Bryant, Virginia Davidson, Daralie Siegel, Mar- sha Andrews, Donald Morgan. THE NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY is an honorary organization to which students who have excelled in leadership, scholarship, and character may belong. To be accepted as a member of this society is one of the greatest honors a student may receive during his high school years. In order to apply for membership, one must be nominated by a member of the faculty. The National Honor Society encourages good citizen- ship and service to the school. EEST? THEIR MAJ ESTIES A King Moc Langston on ERE I TROD CED TO THE Seniors: The difference between a great person and an average person is that the great person sets up objectives in life and achieves them, while the overoge person just lives on, consuming time, but never stopping to figure out exactly where he is going or what he wants. After objectives are set, three things are required to ac- complish them: First, a knowledge of how to do the task at hand, secondly, a will to do, thirdly, the courage to surmount all objectives no matter how impossible it may seem to overcome them. Add to those a self-confidence, which you may achieve by saying over and over to your- self, I can, I can, I con, and never let a semblance of I can't creep into your mind. jSo now, as you enter the world of opportunity, remember jthat almost anything is possible if you try hard enough. lBe a GREAT person. i Good Luckl I Nancy Alexander CL SS SPO OR I congratulate you on having reached this important stage in your life. To many of you it is the first major accom- plishment achieved by your own efforts. You hcxe proved to yourself that you can, you need no fear of the future. As you leave N.N.H.S., either to enter higher institutions of learning or to immediately become a part of your com- munity, you will find that each tomorrow will bring new challenges. Face them with faith and courage. You will find that the teachings of your church, your home, and your school have fitted you for these emergencies. Have confidence in yourself-you have learned more than you now realize. Believe in your God-He will guide you aright, for from Him cometh all power. Be loyal to your country-obey its laws and keep it free. Be honest in all you do. Each of you has a part to play in the great scheme of things. Remember those to whose labors and unselfish service and sacrifice we owe so much. Their devotion to duty obligates each of us to the future. Let it never be said of you that a member of the class of I954 failed in his duty. Whatever be your lot in life you can make it the envy of others. Whatever task be yours you can put upon it a mark of dignity by giving to it the best that is in you. We are God's fellow workers. In the days to come may He grant you wisdom to choose the right, strength to uphold your choice, and character to make you beloved by your fellow man. To each of the Graduates of the Glass of I954 my deepest appreciation. I assure you that I feel singularly honored to have been chosen your sponsor. i Sincerely, Herman Levy I37 WITH THESE LAST NGTES, GUR ,sm Q0 SPRINGS in the oir, so these X NN O.
