Here the pur- pose is to prepare young people for the voyages they may take, whether to college or into a business or trade. In l89O, steps were taken to change the Chesapeake Dry Dock and Construction Company to the Newport News Ship- building and Dry Dock Company. During its sixty years ot operation, besides building ships of all kinds, it has con- structed turbines and accessories tor some of the largest dams in the world, repaired thousands of ships for all nations, built railway cars and engines, floating power plants and many types ot miscellaneous machinery. The yard now employs approximately 6,500 men and is pres- ently in a period ot adjustment, so that it can continue to serve the peacetime needs ot our country.
