Two graduating classes previously have chosen the launchings of ships as the theme for their annual, but no class has ever used the shipyard itself. The importance of the local shipyard in this present war is so great that the staff voted unanimously to pay tribute to the N. N. S. 84 D. D. Co. The outstanding part the local yard is portraying in the present world conflict can not be overlooked by anyone, especially the enemy. For when the United States entered the war the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company had built four of the seven aircraft carriers in the U. S. Navy-The Ranger, delivered to the Navy in l934, Yorktown, delivered in l937, Enterprise, delivered in l938, and the Hornet in l94l. These four carriers have seen actual combat duty and have fought gallantly for the Stars and Stripes. The Yorktown went clown courageously in the Battle of Midway, June 7, l942. But it has been replaced in the line of duty by the Essex, just recently completed by the shipyard for the Navy. The un- finished Bon Homme Richard has been re-named the Yorktown to carry on the spirit and glory of that illustrious ship. The shipyard is not only prominent in the building of carriers but has built several battleships, numbers of cruisers, destroyers, and troop trans- ports and tank carriers. Destroyers played a vital part in the last war, but today, aircraft carriers are proving most important in the phase of duty. Established in l89l, the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company has served its country through three wars-the Spanish-American War, World War I and now World War ll. Until May lO, l94O, the shipyard was the second largest privately-owned industry of its kind in the world. On the above dates it became a corporation. So it is with pride that we present this annual paying honor to the local shipyard. TWO THREE THE BATTLE OF MIDWAY. THE ORIGINAL YORKTOWN WHICH WENT DOWN IN IS THIS SHALL BE AVENGED! SHE DIEDICATIGN 'A' 'll' 12' ln recognition oi his fine work as in- structor of English and Iournalismy his capable ability to advise the publica- tions oi the Beacon and Anchorg his will- ingness to help us with our problemsg his never ending patienceg and his co- operative attitude toward school activ- ities 7 we, the annual staff, would like to show our appreciation by dedicating the February '43 Anchor to Mr. A. Holmes, Jr. MR. A. HOLMES, .IR FIVE To The lvlernbers ol: the l:ebruary Graduating Class ol: lQLl3 ln these trying times, it is not too difficult to- tell Mem- bers of the February Graduating Class a few important words that may help them in the months to come. This class is leaving school during the greatest conflict in the history of the world. Who knows, but in six months many of you will be sent to various parts of the globe to fight for the same ideals for which our forefathers fought, and the Allied Nations are fighting to preserve. Most of you boys, and a few girls' will be entering the armed services ofthe United States. lf so, I do wish you will remember this fine motto: When the One Great Scorer comes to write against your name, he writes not that you won or lost, but how you played the game. With this motto in mind, Members of the February Grad- uating Class, remember this world conflict is the greatest con- test that has ever been fought on any field. lt will be necessary at all times for you to play that game hard, remain physically fit, and sacrifice all you can to help our boys bring back victory and an everlasting democracy for the world of tomorrow. l am sure that students of this class will present themselves to the world, giving all they have, asking no odd. A Newport News boy or girl has never had to withdraw because of lack of courage whether it be an easy or a hard task. Now it is time to prove to the world that there are many boys and girls among you who will be capable leaders in this world conflict. .There may be others of you who will go to work in the various defense industries, especially the local shipyard. If you do, work hard, and steadfastly. Remember that a fellow member of your class is out on the battlefield, or upon the ocean waiting for the tools you are turning out to beat the Axis Nations. Students, you are ready because of the fine training you have received here at Newport News High School. Good bye, good luck, and may God bless you. lJULlUS CONN SIX MR. JULIUS CONN-CLASS SPONSOR SEVEN Honorary Dedication Hitt The Februciry l943 orddudtino closs proudly pcrys tribute to the mony ordducrtes oi Newport News l-lioh School who hdve onswered the coll to the colors, either to the crrmy or ncrvy.
