The scroll of the ancient scribe, the printina press, the nevvsboy cry- ina his wares on the street, are early symbols of a rapidly chanaina field of communication. Since the days of the ancient Chinese, vvho are report- ed to have discovered the art of printina, to Gutenbera who developed it, to American inaenuity which utilized it, is but a moment, relatively speakina, in this chanae. What accomplishments lie ahead vve do not know. With the seeminaly infinite possibilities of radio only partly realized, with television, with the radio or fac- simile newspaper rapidly beina developed and novv in use to some extent, it is difficult even to auess as to what the future holds. No matter what form it may take in the near future, We hope that communication of nevvs and ideas and opinions will never be prohibited, that the riaht of free speech will never be taken avvay-for that way lies dic- tatorship. ONLY ONE There are many, many houses in the world but to each of us there is only one home. There are many, many schools in the world but to each of you there is only one school. There are many, many persons of the opposite sex in the World but one day you will find, I hope, that there is only one for you. These are fundamental loyalties of life and they arise from the fact that these agencies have properly filled fundamental needs. The school career which you are now closing' has, I trust, exhibited a fulfillment of the fundamental obligations a school has toward its members. If you are leav- ing with a sense of satisfaction in your career here, with a feeling of com- fort as you look back upon your school associations and with a feeling of confidence in what it has given you, then we have both succeeded. If there is frustration or a feeling of having missed something, and a lack of cer- tainty as to just what you are carrying away with you, then someone has failed. Go forward on this day with a determination to cultivate and en- hance that which you have received and to seek anew that which you do not now have. Herein will lie success and satisfaction in life. mme
