Musical Midshipmen Newport News high school's band is a comparatively new organization, having been in existence only two years. It was organized by Miss Eleanor Sherman, present head of the music department, in 1931. The original organization consisted of only eight members but within the period of two years has grown to thirty-two pieces. The first student leader of the band was Stanley Kennon, February '33, who took over his duties last fall. Billy Verell, high-stepping sophomore, succeeded Kennon and will direct the band for the next two years. At football and basketball games and in pep assemblies, the band, in strik- ing white uniforms and gold and bllle capes, is always successful in arousing the students to a high degree of enthusiasm. Special transportation is provided for the members to accompany the teams to out-of-town games. The band makes several public appearances each semester besides on oc- casions of athletic contests. During the acts of the fall and spring dramatic productions, between parts of the eantata each May, in Visiting Night assembly, and to the entertainment at various banquets and other social engagements, the band's contribution is always enthusiastically received. Sherman's Symphony To provide entertainment for all public performances and some occasions outside of the scope of school activities has been the work of the high school or- chestra, which has developed rapidly through the untiring efforts of Miss Eleanor Sherman, director of music. Under the baton of the leader, this organization has come to the front with speedy strides in recent appearances. Along with the band, the orchestra par- ticipated in the Uolonial Music Festival held in Vililliamsburg this spring. The work is heavy and practices are long and tedious, but with such virtuosos of the bow as Layton Goodman, Howard lloatwright, and George VVingfield play- ing to capacity, against the background of smooth rhythm of the reed and brass players, the familiar strains of Strauss and Beethoven come alive, so skillfully are they rendered. The orchestra, working hard to attain perfection, is destined to advance to even greater and more difficult accomplishments.
