A I ffeeeocon 3 mf? -. .. gn A K-X! , , no i f Some Thinas Accomplished-Some Thinfls Done All of the spring activities in which representatives of Newport News High School representatives participated were pronouncedly successful. In the liter- ary events held at the University of Virginia, Alfred Dickinson won the Class A Boys' Speaking Contest., while Esther Aronow duplicated the feat in the girls' contest. Chason Tucker captured the State Reading title for the boys after taking Class A honors in boys' reading. The track team enjoyed a highly successful season, running second to the high-powered John Marshall outfit. in both Tidewater and State meets. At the Penn Relays the local contingent, composed of Charlie Spangler, R-oy Carter, Shirley Dickinson, and Captain Willard Gresham, romped to victory over ten other schools to the tune of 3.33.1 Likewise on the tennis courts the Typhoon racqueteers swept to the State Champion-ship by trouncing all opposition. Alfred Dickinson and Billy Verell won the doubles championship at Charlottesville. The Beacon news ia er rose to un irecedented heights receiving a Medalist I C 7 E5 award from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association at its Eleventh Annual Convention in New York City, March 9. An experiment in photoplay appreciation conducted by Miss Harriet D. Smith was recognized as being one of the first in the country. Leadership in the State Curriculum Revision Program has been furnished by members of the Newport. News High School faculty under the inspiration of Principal Fred M. Alexander, who has been indefatigable in his labors as head of the Committee on Aims. Miss Gladys G. Gambill served as chairman of the Committee on Language Arts, while Miss Macon Barnes, Mrs. Anne Perkins Scruggs, Miss Louise Ramsay, Miss Anna Hay, Miss Mabel Barham, and Miss Elma Free, together with Mr. Carlos Urrutia and Mr. Carlos Loop, have ad- vanced the progress of building the curriculum in their respective fields. At the same time practically every other member of the faculty cooperated in the work. Superintendent Joseph H. Saunders served as a member of the Committee on Definitions.
