You have now attained the first milestone in your pro- gression toward some definite goal. May this achievement effect in you a desire to accomplish greater objectifves in the field of education that you may discofver the truth and the real significance of life. For when you have arrifved at the truth, you -will then be able to adopt a philosophy that 'will help you to meet the exigencies of a rapidly changing ci'vili- zation, that will develop in you a tolerant and sympathetic attitude toward mankind, that 'will bring peace and satisfac- tion to your soul. Hea11en's blessings upon you! i Annye B. Burbank. DEDICATION To Min Annye B. Burbank In sincere appreciation qf laer excellence ay inc!i11ic!naL teaclaer and guide BON VO YAGE Tomorrow we embark upon a new voyage. For these four years -we have lain in our docks, tugging at our moorings. No doubt some of us have lain dormant, but for the most part, we have been eager to get un- der way. Some of us may run upon the reefs of failure, but we have been well fitted out for our voyage and we are confident that -we can weather the present stormy conditions. ,X fx SA XXX .- 5 A .J :Q E gg Ng SENIORS -5,2 X OEEICERS. .ROLL EE-Q2 HONOR STUDENTS 1.2. Musical Midshipmen Newport News high school's band is a comparatively new organization, having been in existence only two years. It was organized by Miss Eleanor Sherman, present head of the music department, in 1931. The original organization consisted of only eight members but within the period of two years has grown to thirty-two pieces. The first student leader of the band was Stanley Kennon, February '33, who took over his duties last fall. Billy Verell, high-stepping sophomore, succeeded Kennon and will direct the band for the next two years. At football and basketball games and in pep assemblies, the band, in strik- ing white uniforms and gold and bllle capes, is always successful in arousing the students to a high degree of enthusiasm. Special transportation is provided for the members to accompany the teams to out-of-town games. The band makes several public appearances each semester besides on oc- casions of athletic contests. During the acts of the fall and spring dramatic productions, between parts of the eantata each May, in Visiting Night assembly, and to the entertainment at various banquets and other social engagements, the band's contribution is always enthusiastically received. Sherman's Symphony To provide entertainment for all public performances and some occasions outside of the scope of school activities has been the work of the high school or- chestra, which has developed rapidly through the untiring efforts of Miss Eleanor Sherman, director of music. Under the baton of the leader, this organization has come to the front with speedy strides in recent appearances. Along with the band, the orchestra par- ticipated in the Uolonial Music Festival held in Vililliamsburg this spring. The work is heavy and practices are long and tedious, but with such virtuosos of the bow as Layton Goodman, Howard lloatwright, and George VVingfield play- ing to capacity, against the background of smooth rhythm of the reed and brass players, the familiar strains of Strauss and Beethoven come alive, so skillfully are they rendered. The orchestra, working hard to attain perfection, is destined to advance to even greater and more difficult accomplishments. One of the most outstanding clubs in N. N. H. S. is the Literary Club. This club started in 1928 with members composed of only those who were in- terested in and had literary ability. As the organization progressed it sought to cover a wider area -and now the members are those students who show interest in art in general. The present membership is fifty-four. Each month two business meetings are held in school and two social meet- ings are conducted at the homes of various members. The subject. Greek art and literature, has been discussed by the club this year and an assembly pro- gram on this topic was presented. The Senior Literary Club is composed of only juniors and seniors while the Junior Literary Club is made up of freshmen and sophomores. Mrs. Mae Marshall Edwards is adviser of both organizations. The senior club officers are: Clinton Hodder, presidentg Mary Ellen Bloxom, first vice-presidentg Josephine Quinn, second vice-presidentg Gene Stratton, third vice-president, Nell Virginia Heath, secretaryg and Betty Bux- ton, treasurer. Lloyd Noland heads the junior club. Y Q. ffeB6ClCOl'l Vkwvlfwfxffszxvf-Xt X: - fwg S Bmlg, Sfalvil, la-fi to right: llaruld lilill'lilllllll, llurotliy llardy. Miriam l'arpi-ntvr. I l NVilson high of Portrsmouth and followed this feat by nosing out Maury high of Norfolk, 32-30. However, in their third conference tilt, John Marshall high of Richmond, eked out a 31-27 victory over the Fonnmen in a hotly contested game played in the capital city. Against Maury here the Typhoon hit its stride to romp on the l'onnnodores 332-19 and whipped John Marshall the following week to the tune of 31-19. These two wins placed the Justices and the Gold and Blue in a tie for first place in the eastern division, but when Newport News trounced XVilson 34-17 and Maury upset the dope to defeat John Marshall 28-18, a play-off was forestalled and the Typhoon was declared eastern state champions. We believe that it gives a true cross-section of senior life, and we believe if the other students can see it through our eyes they will have a record of their high school life worthy of keeping. VVe have been fortunate indeed in procuring for our magazine a wood cut by J. J. Lankes. The motif of the book being nautical, Mr. Lankes permitted the use of his subject, Oyster Boats, as a frontispiece, there-by lending to our magazine the atmosphere of a picturesque locale. Vile are most grateful to the artist for this distinctive feature of our book. Mr. Otto Vileiss, in the taking of activities pictures, has shown himself a thorouglily competent and obliging photographer. On account of present eco- nomic conditions, many-clubs and organizations in the school were necessarily omitted from this section. The staff has, therefore, selected organizations which represent the largest 11umber of pupils, regretting that it. could not include all. Inspiration for the making of this little book was derived in part from the February edition of the Beacon, which was a new type of senior magazine. Closer cooperation by staff members has been given than has been evident at times in tl1e past. The publishing of the book has been made possible by the cooperation of the various local firms whose advertisements are included herein. These firms we recommend to every reader as being worthy of his patronage.
