He attended the University of Notre Dame, Indiana, prior to entering the U. S. Naval Academy. He was commissioned an Ensign on graduation with the Class of 1947 on June 5,1946. He has served in various capacities at sea, primarily in Destroyers and Cruisers, including Engineering Officer, Mis- sile Officer and Executive Officer. His previous commands include USS PIMA COUNTY, USS MEREDITH, USS SAMPSON, DESTROYER DIVISION SEVENTY-TWO and CRUISER-DESTROYER FLOTILLA TWELVE. On 8 Jan- uary 1973, he assumed command of the United States SECOND Fleet with additional duty as Commander of NATO's Striking Fleet Atlantic. His shore assignments have been at the Naval Academy Prep School, Bainbridge, Maryland, Staff, Commander Op- erational Test and Evaluation Force, Norfolk, Virginia, and three assignments at the Bureau of Naval Personnel, Wash- ington, D. C. He has served as the Navy Member of the Department of Defense Military Compensation Study Group and Navy Member of the Joint Military-Federal Civil Service Comparability Study Group in Washington. He also served as a member of the Secretary of the Navy's Reten- tion Task Force in the Office of the Secretary of the Navy. His last tour was as Head of the Distribution Branch, Enlisted Personnel and then as Assistant Chief for Plans and Programs in the Bureau of Naval Personnel. He was awarded the Legion of Merit on completion of this latter tour. Since graduating from the Naval Academy, Vice Admiral Finneran has attended the Naval Guided Missile School, Pomona, California, the Armed Forces Staff College, Nor- folk, Virginia, and the National War College, Washington, D. C. In addition to the Legion of Merit and Bronze Star Medal with Combat V , Vice Admiral Finneran has the American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, National Defense Service Medal with bronze star, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal CLebanonj, and the Vietnam Service Medal. He also has the Republic of Vietnam Cam- paign Medal with Device and the Vietnamese Navy Distin- guished Service Medal, Second Class. His official home address is 5 30 Willis Avenue, Williston Park, New York. He presently resides at Georgia House, 423 Dillingham Boulevard, Naval Station, Norfolk, Virginia. He is married to the former Lillian M. McNamara of Bald- win, New York and they have five children: Mrs. Patricia A. Diepold, Ensign John G. Finneran, Jr., USNR, ET3 William Finneran, USN, Sharon L. Finneran and Kathleen M. Fin- neran. -151:
