3 CAPTAIN Ronald T. Kelly COMMANDING OFFICER USS NEWPORT NEWS CA- 148 CAPTAIN RONALD THOMAS KELLY, USN COMMANDING OFFICER Captain Ronald T. Kelly assumed command of NEW- PORT NEWS in May 1973, reporting from duty on the staff of Commander Naval Forces, Vietnam Where he served as Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations and Commander, Coastal Surveillance Force QCTF 1155. Born 20 Feb. 1928 in Montague City, Massachusetts, Captain Kelly attended Norwich University, Northfield, Vermont before appointment to the United States Naval Academy from which he graduated in 1950. He is also a 1967 graduate of the Naval Warfare Course, United States Naval War College and completed nuclear propulsion train- ing in 1957 as one of the first four officers trained for nuclear surface ship operations. Captain Kelly has served at sea in USS LEYTE QCV 321, USS NORFOLK CDL lj and USS LONG BEACH CCGN 95. He was Executive Officer of USS BIGELOW CDD 9421 and commissioning Commanding Officer of USS SAMPLE CDE 10481, serving in command through acceptance, trials and Seventh Fleet deployment from 1967 to 1969. He has served ashore as Flag Lieutenant and Aide to Commander Amphibious Forces, Atlantic Fleet, Assistant Personnel Program Manager for Nuclear Power and Assign- ment Officer for qualified nuclear surface He has served ashore as Flag Lieutenant and Aide to Commander Amphibious Forces, Atlantic Fleetg Assistant Personnel Program Manager for Nuclear Power and Assign- ment Officer for qualified nuclear surface officers, Bureau of Naval Personnel, and Head, ASW Section, Combat Sys- tems Division, Office of the Chief of Naval Operations. Captain Kelly is married to the former Mary Margaret Walzl of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, the couple have three children.
