3 CAPTAIN Ronald T. Kelly COMMANDING OFFICER USS NEWPORT NEWS CA- 148 CAPTAIN RONALD THOMAS KELLY, USN COMMANDING OFFICER Captain Ronald T. Kelly assumed command of NEW- PORT NEWS in May 1973, reporting from duty on the staff of Commander Naval Forces, Vietnam Where he served as Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations and Commander, Coastal Surveillance Force QCTF 1155. Born 20 Feb. 1928 in Montague City, Massachusetts, Captain Kelly attended Norwich University, Northfield, Vermont before appointment to the United States Naval Academy from which he graduated in 1950. He is also a 1967 graduate of the Naval Warfare Course, United States Naval War College and completed nuclear propulsion train- ing in 1957 as one of the first four officers trained for nuclear surface ship operations. Captain Kelly has served at sea in USS LEYTE QCV 321, USS NORFOLK CDL lj and USS LONG BEACH CCGN 95. He was Executive Officer of USS BIGELOW CDD 9421 and commissioning Commanding Officer of USS SAMPLE CDE 10481, serving in command through acceptance, trials and Seventh Fleet deployment from 1967 to 1969. 1rz r W 'mx 'wmvr T- .-v-ff--v ew ....!IL CAPTAIN CHARLES EDWARD HATHAWAY UNITED STATES NAVY Captain Charles Edward HATHAWAY was born in Minot, North Dakota on November 22, 1925. Prior to attending the Naval Academy, he served with various Naval Aviation Training Units as an Aviation Cadet in the V-5 Program. He received his commission as an Ensign in the U. S. Navy in June 1948 and was immediately assigned as an instructor at his alma mater until entering flight training in January 1949. Captain HATHAWAY received his flight training at Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida and Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, Texas, was designated a naval aviator on May 26, 1950, and was assigned to the Opera- tions Department of VS-26 in June 1950. He remained with that Squadron until June 1953 when he was assigned to Naval Air Advanced Training as an Instrument Flight In- structor and as Personnel Officer. From June 1956 until July 1958, he was assigned to VX-4 as SPARROW III Project Officer. Upon graduation from t-he Naval War Col- lege in June 1959, Captain HATHAWAY was assigned to USS MIDWAY, where he served as the Assistant Air Opera- tions Officer and Weapons Employment Officer. A two- year course at the Naval Postgraduate School leading to a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nuclear Engineering fol- lowed. He was then assigned as Project Director in VX-5 until 1964. From 1964 until 1968, Captain HATHAWAY was Executive Officer and Commanding Officer of VA-195, and Commanding Officer of VA-125. He again returned to 51'-3' .'l Ei- - the U. S. Naval Postgraduate School for a course in the Defense Management Systems, and in December 1968, be- came Commanding Officer of USS MATTAPONI QAO-415. This unit received the Meritorious Unit Commendation for services in Southeast Asia. The next tour of duty carried Captain HATHAWAY to the office of the Secretary of Defense where he was assigned as a military assistant in the Tactical Test and Evaluation Division. In September of 1972, he joined the Staff of Commander SECOND Fleet. In addition to numerous campaign and service medals, Captain HATHAWAY holds the Silver Star, the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross with two Gold Stars, the Bronze Star Medal with Gold Star, the Air Medal with Numeral 28 , the Navy Commendation Medal with Com- bat V and Gold Star, and the Navy Unit Commendation for services with CVW-19 between November 1966 and April 1967. He was awarded the Cross of Gallantry with Gold Star by the Republic of Vietnam. Captain HATHAWAY has the distinction of being the first aviator to fly more than 300 combat strike missions over Vietnam. Captain HATHAWAY resides in Virginia Beach, Virginia with his wife, the former Marie Hassett of Mankato, Min- nesota and four of their seven children. Two of their sons are currently attending the U. S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado and their daughter is attending San Jose State College in California.
