SHIPYARD OVERHA UL N ORF ULK NA VAL SHIPYARD On June 28, 1965, Newport News entered the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, Virginia for a five month period of refitting and overhaul. A yard overhaul is a regular part of the life cycle of aman-of-war. In olden times itwas a simple process, scrape the barnacles off the hull, re-tar the rigging, replace a timber here or there. The 20th century equivalent is more complex. The shipyard is a kaleidescope of sights and sounds, scrapers, blasters, Welders and chipping hammers pound at the ear. Men clamber aloft in the superstructure and alongthe sides of the ship. In the passageways below are strung blower ducts, air, water, and electrical linesg a jungleof rubber. In the compartments, deck plates are torn up, cables are everywhere-

EXECUTIVE OFFICER COMMANDER ROBERT T. RUXTGN, JR., USN Commander Ruxton received his commission after graduating from Cornell University in 1945, He assumed the duties as Executive Officer of the USS NEWPORT NEWS on August 1, 1966. Being an Exec is no new role for Commander Buxton as he has served in that capacity aboard the USS J EKYL QAG-1355, and the USS SAUFLEY QDD-4659. He has commanded the Minesweeper USS SALUTE and the destroyer USS MANLEY. Other tours for Commander Ruxton include LSMR 406, USS BAUSELL, ComDesRon 7, Cru Div 2, Commander First Fleet Staff, Staff of Commander Middle East Force, and as project officer of the Ship's Characteristics Board, Office of the Chief of Naval Operations. Commander Buxton has been a student at General Line School, Post GraduateSchool, and the Armed Forces Staff College. He is married to the former Eloise Nancy Boggs of Kingsport, Tennessee. They have two children, Nancy Ann and Robert Thomas, III.
