SHIPYARD OVERHA UL N ORF ULK NA VAL SHIPYARD On June 28, 1965, Newport News entered the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, Virginia for a five month period of refitting and overhaul. A yard overhaul is a regular part of the life cycle of aman-of-war. In olden times itwas a simple process, scrape the barnacles off the hull, re-tar the rigging, replace a timber here or there. The 20th century equivalent is more complex. The shipyard is a kaleidescope of sights and sounds, scrapers, blasters, Welders and chipping hammers pound at the ear. Men clamber aloft in the superstructure and alongthe sides of the ship. In the passageways below are strung blower ducts, air, water, and electrical linesg a jungleof rubber. In the compartments, deck plates are torn up, cables are everywhere- JPY' af 5 V J f ,. August 6, 1965 Captain Theodore L. Balis relieves Captain Robert D. The fabled land of the Vikings was our first glimpse of the European continent after 16 days at sea, and Exercise Straight- Laced. Traveling up the grandeur of the Oslo Fliord, few of us were disappointed at what we saw. The spirit of the Norwegians is as rugged and sturdy as the land itself . Norwegian dedica- P1011 to the principles ' of freedom and lhdependence are well known, and examples abound in the country's history. Their partici- Pation in NATO is an indication of Norway's Continuing committment to freedom. It was fitting that the STRIKING FLEET ATLANTICf SECOND FLEET Change of Command was held IH Oslo. The Ship's Marine drill team and Second Fleet band gave performances and made friends everywhere. , Y l'i.9'5QMffgQ S057 A r.., , ,, , fl ',w':4pQ , ., , 1 , vffrfy ,ga we 4:4435 rsggew' In every European port, social receptions were held on the forecastle.
