Named after the shipbuilding city, she was commis- sioned on January 29, 1949, and cast down the ways into the James River on March 6 of the same year. After a vigorous two month shake- down cruise to the Caribbean, the NEWPORT NEWS was assigned to Commander Cruiser Atlantic Fleet. Only six months after commissioning, she became Flagship for Admiral W. H. P. Blandy, then Commander-in- Chief U. S. Atlantic Fleet during a two- week reserve cruise to Halifax, N. S. With Commander Second Fleet aboard, the Flagship NEWPORT NEWS crossed the Arctic Circle in No- vember, 1949. Upon completion of the cruise, .the ship's first skipper, Captain Roland Smoot was relieved by Captain James Scott Laidlaw. On January 20, 1950, the NEWPORT NEWS began her first tour of duty in the Mediterranean. The ship served as Fleet Flagship for Vice-Admiral John Jennings Ballentine, Commander Sixth Fleet, for a period of five months during which she visited 15 ports inthe Mediterranean. She was relieved by the USS SALEM in Gibraltar, B.C.C. May 26. During the three month yard period that followed, Captain Edward Nelson Parker relieved Captain Laidlaw as commanding officer. The NEWPORT NEWS sailed from Norfolk to the Caribbean in September and under- went a refresher training course for seven weeks. Upon returning to Norfolk in November, the NEW- PORT NEWS immediately departed for the,Mediterran- ean area for further service with the Sixth Fleet spending Thanksgiving at sea and Christmas in- Naples, Italy. In May 1951 she returned to Norfolk. Following another reserve training cruise in the Norfolk area, the NEWPORT NEWS participated in an operations demonstration exercise for Secretary of Defense George C. Marshall. The subsequent visit to New York for the 4th of July marked the first U.S. port other than Norfolk that the ship had visited. , On August 4, 1951, the NEWPORT NEWS with Captain William Goodwin Cooper in command, de- parted for her first Midshipman cruise with 400 middies aboard. The ship visited Halifax, N. S.: Boston, Mass., and then proceeded to the Caribbean before returning to Norfolk in September. As Flag- ship for Vice-Admiral Felix B. Stump, Commander U.S. Second Fleet, the NEWPORT NEWS became a participant in one of the largest fleet exercises since WWII, known officially as Lantflex 52. After a short yard period the NEWPORT NEWS sailed January 9th for the Mediterranean and her third tour as Sixth Fleet Flagship. One of the high- lights of the 1952 Mediterranean cruise took place when a NEWPORT NEWS entry won grand prize in the Carnival of Flowers Festival at Villefranche, competing against 30 flower laden boats entered by the surrounding villages. The prize winning float was the flowery 9644 motor launch transformed into an Italian Gondola and equipped with eight French beauties. The ship returned to Norfolk on May 8th. After a one-month leave and upkeep period, the heavy cruiser entered Portsmouth Navy Yard for a 90-day yard availability. In September, she departed on a nine-week extensive underway training cruise to the Caribbean. I On 6-January 6, 1953, the NEWPORT NEWS sailed on her fourth Mediterranean cruise relieving the USS COLUMBUS in Algiers. After an extension of three weeks, she arrived- home on June 2nd, crossing the Atlantic in a speedy six days. Completing a 30-day restricted yard availability period in Portsmouth, the NEWPORT NEWS oper- ated in the Norfolk area until August 9 when she departed on a gunnery training exercise in the Caribbean., 4 The ship returned to Norfolk September 26 and prepared for an annual Operational Readiness ln- spection prior to departing for her present cruise January 4, 1954. Journeying across the expanse of the At- lantic, our thoughts were not only of what was behind us, but of the countries and ex- periences which were yet to unfold. The Rock was the first sight of land after 9 days, 22 hours and 30 minutes and to most of us it was a stirring one. It proved to be as solid as that insurance salesman once stated it, Yes, we were here! Now, the Rex Cleaners are on the pier . . . This seemed to suggest that the Crown Cleaners had a Mediterranean branch, but when our dress blues were returned with but- tons, we knew better. And the Bobbie stand- ing on the pier as well as the cockney taxi driver were constant reminders that we were merely visitors, on British soil. They opened their fortress, their shops and their taverns to us. One of the latter even offered Phil Spitalney's Band lGibiditionl, and of course beer. For those who were more adventurous there were daily tours to Seville and Malaga and nightly tours to Algeciras and LaLinea. So it was, that after three quiet but pleasant days, we set sail for our second Port-of-Call. ...Q fl...- some of us even made friends . . . n . . . . .'.'. .'.......-.. . . . . - . . . . . . - '.'.'.'.'.'. For most it was the first visit to Portugal, save possibly for several plank owners who had been here on the NEWPORT NEWS's first Mediterranean fling. We tied up at the Doca alcontora and found ourselves no more than a stone's throw to the center of town. Avenue de Liberadorde was described in the Gouge' as the Fifth Avenue of Lisbon. However, there was little besides the prices to suggest this. Many Nite Clubs dotted the narrow side streets, among these the Texas Bar, Maxins, and Cristol. One couldn't help but notice that here was a port unique in many respects. The old town had its narrow, hilly, unpaved streets . . . and the Fado , the Portuguese folk song. The tours to Sintra and Estvil displayed numerous palaces and monuments as well as a picturesque countryside. Some of us also visited the Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima. Shipboard activity during this period was largely concerned with receiving the officers and men of the Sixth Fleet Staff. lt was here that we began to accept the sound of Beeps and the shrillness of the Boatswain's pipe as commonplace. The people of Lisbon were most cordial to the fleet. As one of their friendly gestures, they pre- sented a Bull Fight at the local arena, The Alges Bull-Ring. It was a thrilling exhibition displaying the native styles of Mexico and Spain, as well as Portugal. But the highlight of the afternoon was the keen contest between our sailors and the bull. With much to do, our seven days in Lisbon were a complete as well as an interesting experience. However, the biggest thrill of being in Athens was the realization that you were walking among the structures where our modern civilization was born. Our visits to the ruins of the many temples and palaces, and to the Acropolis were enhanced by the detailed and inspiring histories portrayed by our guides. From this insight one could sense the attitude of sane balance and clear- sightedness that dominates the Hellenic mood. We came to know the Greek spirit which influenced the development of mod- ern -science and free society. athens, greece Anchoring out in the bay of Piraeus our visit to Greece began by piping aboard King Paul and Queen Fredricka. Old friends of Admiral Cassady and the NEWPORT NEWS, we knew that their call was an gf. ficial welcome to the land that reflected today's modern culture against the ancient roots where it began. Everyone felt the warmth of the people in the grace of their queen's smile and recognized that symbolic nobility again when seeing the classic lines of the architecture of ancient Greece. The city of Athens was a short bus ride from the fleet landing. There were seen the fruits of American foreign aid as recon- struction flourished amidst the devastation of World War ll and the detoriation oftime. And here a sailor could buy a beer at the Nautic, Mom Germaine's, or what- ever his favorite haunt might be, and receive a cordial OK pay tomorrow, I trust . The harbor of Villa itself seemed to stretch its arms about the NEWPORT NEWS as she lay resting in the cool blue waters. France was all that every travel ad ever claimed, and we took to the Cote D'Azur as if we were native born to its spirit. The French people have our kind of beauty, humor and emotions and being among them we enjoyed the granduer of Monte Carlo, Nice, and Cannes, the quaintness of Antibes, Villefranche and La Turbiep and the flavour of Edenroc, the Hotel Negresco and night life on the Riviera.
